Chapter 10 - The Broken Legacy

Charles couldn't open the envelope. His hands were shaking so violently that the paper tore uselessly in his grip.
Cordelia took the document from his fingers, unfolded the single page, and read the diagnostic conclusion aloud to the room:
"'Diagnostic Evaluation: Complete azoospermia due to microdeletion of the Y chromosome. Patient presents absolute, irreversible biological sterility. Natural conception is clinically impossible.'"
The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
The two board members standing near the fireplace shifted uncomfortably, staring at the floor, realizing that they were witnessing the total, catastrophic collapse of New England's most prominent corporate family.
Charles slowly turned his head to look at Phoebe.
Phoebe stood frozen beside the sofa. The smooth, confident expression she had worn for seven months crumbled, replaced by the panicked, cornered look of an operative whose cover had blown three seconds before extraction.
"Charles..." Phoebe whispered, her hands trembling over her pregnant belly. "Charles, listen to me... the doctors... the doctors said miracles happen—"
"MIRACLES?" Charles roared, the scotch glass on the side table shattering as his arm swept across the tray, sending glass and amber liquid crashing against the marble floor.
He lunged toward her, his face contorted in pure, hysterical rage. "YOU LIED TO ME! YOU TOLD ME THEY WERE MINE!"
Arthur Vance stepped between Charles and Phoebe immediately, holding Charles back with a firm, practiced grip.
Phoebe backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.
"Who is the father, Phoebe?" Cordelia asked, her voice dangerously quiet as she stepped closer to the girl. "Is it Julian?"
Phoebe didn't answer. She looked at Charles, then at Cordelia, and finally at me—standing calmly near the grand staircase in my simple California attire.
She knew there was no recovery. The offshore accounts were documented. The genetic reality was absolute.

"Julian is twice the man Charles ever was," Phoebe spat out suddenly, dropping all pretense of innocence, her eyes flashing with bitter venom. "Charles couldn't even run his own company without his mother holding his hand! He was so desperate to prove he wasn't a failure that he bought every lie I gave him!"
Charles sank onto the velvet sofa, burying his face in his hands, weeping openly like a child in front of his board members, his mother, and his former wife.
