Chapter 5 - The Fractured Monolith

The corridor seemed to lose all oxygen in a single, violent stroke.

Dante Russo went entirely, terrifyingly still. The imposing, untouchable Don of the Chicago Outfit—a man who had survived car bombs, federal grand juries, and cartel ambushes without breaking a sweat—looked as though someone had driven an iron spike straight through his sternum.

His dark eyebrows rose by a fraction of an inch. His breathing, previously deep and measured, completely arrested in his throat. The commanding, impenetrable mask of lethal authority that had terrified two generations of criminals shattered into raw, uncomprehending shock.

His dark eyes, wide and disoriented, darted from the physician’s stern face across the narrow gap to where Emily stood.

His gaze dropped to her stomach.

For eight months, Dante had believed her pregnancy was progressing normally under the care of the private concierge doctors Vanessa had personally hired and managed. Because of the endless turf wars in Europe and Vanessa’s constant reports that Emily preferred privacy and rest, Dante had only seen his wife in fleeting moments—always from a distance, always shielded by layers of oversized shawls and dim bedroom lighting. He had noted that her belly was unusually large, but he had dismissed it as the natural miracle of childbearing.

Now, the plural word hung in the air like a ringing church bell.

Babies.

Dante’s lips parted, his rough stubble catching the warm amber light as his gravelly voice cracked, stripped of all its terrifying volume.

"Babies?"

The word was a strangled whisper, small and utterly bewildered, emerging from the throat of a giant who suddenly found the earth dissolving beneath his polished boots.

Behind Dante’s broad shoulder, Vanessa Laurent’s face underwent a violent, grotesque transformation. The cruel, smug amusement that had defined her crimson lips vanished in an instant, replaced by a sudden, sickening paleness that began to seep beneath her immaculate foundation. Her blue eyes widened in sudden, frantic alarm, her manicured fingers instinctively clenching against the fabric of her deep-red silk gown.

She had known.

Three months ago, the corrupt obstetrician Vanessa had placed on the family payroll had identified the twin gestation during an unrecorded scan. Vanessa had buried the file, paying the physician two hundred thousand dollars to alter the records and falsify the medical updates sent to Dante’s encrypted European line. If Dante believed there was only a single, fragile heir whose survival was questionable, he would be far more amenable to setting Emily aside when the child died or was hidden away.

A twin pregnancy meant an undisputed, unbreakable double succession for the Russo bloodline. It meant Emily’s position as the mother of Dante’s heirs was cemented in stone according to the ancient, immutable laws of the Commission.

"Dr. Harrison," Vanessa interjected frantically, her voice pitching up an octave, the smooth aristocratic veneer cracking into sharp hysteria. "You are mistaken! The family charts clearly indicate a singleton pregnancy! The scans from the Gold Coast Clinic confirmed—"

"The Gold Coast Clinic is currently being investigated for medical fraud and license revocation," Dr. Harrison severed her sentence with the cold efficiency of a scalpel. He did not look at her; he kept his eyes pinned to the freezing, lethal countenance of the Don. "Your wife’s previous records were systematically falsified, Mr. Russo. What I am holding in my hands is the reality."
