Chapter 3 - The Web of the Siren

Beside Dante, Vanessa Laurent felt the sudden, dangerous shift in the atmosphere, but her intoxicating hubris blinded her to the precipice upon which she stood. For six months, she had whispered poison into the ears of Dante’s aging lieutenants while the Don was consumed by the European territorial war. She had painted Emily as an emotionally fragile, neurotic burden who was cracking under the weight of the mafia world—a quiet, gentle woman from a respectable background who lacked the iron stomach required to reign as the queen of Chicago.

Vanessa took half a step forward, the heavy ruby silk of her gown whispering across the polished marble. She reached out with a manicured hand, her long red nails lightly grazing the heavy wool of Dante’s tailored sleeve in a calculated display of intimacy, attempting to reassert her psychological leash over the mafia king.

"Dante, darling," Vanessa purred, her melodic voice laced with false pity and sugary condescension, loud enough to echo off the cream walls and strike Emily like a physical slap. "I told you she had slipped away from the estate again. The poor thing has completely unraveled while you were in Italy. Look at her. She refuses to wear the clothes we buy her. She insists on dressing like the cleaning staff, roaming the halls at all hours, muttering to herself. I warned you that her mental state was deteriorating with the pregnancy."

Emily flinched as Vanessa’s venomous words washed over her. Her trembling hand pressed harder into her pregnant abdomen, feeling the frantic, fluttering kicks of the lives inside her. She wanted to scream. She wanted to tell Dante that Vanessa had confiscated her medication, that Vanessa had ordered two armed thugs to drag her into the basement cellar whenever she asked for an obstetrician, that the deep purple bruises beneath her lace-trimmed cuffs were from the house manager twisting her arms behind her back.

But Emily’s vocal cords were paralyzed by sheer terror. She had watched Dante execute men with a flick of his wrist; she had grown up in the brutal orbit of the Chicago families, where the word of a powerful capo’s daughter outweighed the tears of an isolated wife. She looked at Dante’s cold, stony expression, saw his towering, muscular frame dressed in black, and believed with absolute, agonizing certainty that he had sanctioned it all.

"She’s making a public scene, Dante," Vanessa continued smoothly, her red lips curving into that mocking, triumphant crescent as she looked directly at Emily’s tear-stained face. "In a private clinic, no less. Imagine if the Falcone family saw this. Imagine the disgrace to your name. We should have the guards escort her to the car immediately. I have already arranged for a private facility in Wisconsin where she can be properly... supervised until the delivery."

Dante did not look at Vanessa. He did not lean into her touch. In fact, the moment her manicured fingers rested against his suit jacket, Dante’s left shoulder dropped by a fraction of an inch, shedding her touch as if she were a carrier of disease.

His eyes never left Emily. He saw the way her slender knees were shaking beneath the cheap hem of the uniform. He saw the raw, chafed skin at her wrists where the stiff polyester had rubbed her flesh raw. He saw the sheer, unadulterated terror radiating from her large brown eyes—a terror directed entirely at him.

Dante Russo had ruled Chicago through fear for ten years, but seeing that fear reflected in the eyes of the woman he had sworn on an altar to protect struck his chest with the force of an unjacketed hollow-point round. A deep, volcanic rage began to ignite beneath his ribs, dark and lethal, waiting for a single spark to detonate.
