Chapter 5 - The Woman Downstairs

The woman from the motel came to the hospital on the third day after I woke. Her name was Elise Warner. She was not glamorous in person. No red coat. No mystery. Just a tired woman in a gray sweater standing near the doorway of my room, twisting a flash drive between her fingers.
Detective Cole stood beside her.
“I’m sorry,” she said before I could ask anything.
I did not answer.
She looked like she deserved silence.
Elise said my father had told her my parents were separated. That my mother knew. That the marriage was finished except for paperwork. I did not know whether to believe all of that, but her eyes did not have the smugness I expected. They had fear.
“The night it happened,” she said, “Frank came to my motel room furious. He said you had followed us. He said you were going to ruin him. I told him I was done and that if he hurt you, I would go to the police.”
My throat tightened. “Did you?”

Her hand closed around the flash drive. “Not fast enough.”
She had security cameras at her small rental office, she explained, because the motel had a history of break-ins. One camera covered part of the parking lot. Another caught the office door where Frank came back after the assault, shaking and angry, thinking no one could hear him over the rain.
Elise had saved the file, but fear kept her silent for days. Then she saw the news mention my hospitalization. She brought the flash drive to Detective Cole after learning I was still alive.
“What’s on it?” I asked.
Cole’s face changed slightly.
“Enough,” he said.
They played only part of it for me at first. The screen was angled away, the audio clear. My father’s voice. Ragged. Furious. Not the calm man who grilled burgers on Sundays, not the man who taught me to change a tire, not the man my mother had chosen over my body.
“I hit her because she wouldn’t stop telling the truth.”
The room went cold.
There it was.
Not an accident.
Not confusion.
Not a daughter lying to destroy a family.
May you like
Truth.
And his reason for trying to silence it.
