Chapter 1 - The Garage

My father lunged at me inside my parents’ garage, and the first hit knocked me sideways into the cold metal side of his black pickup truck. My phone flashed in my hand as my shoulder struck the door, the camera still recording, the motel video still saved somewhere beneath my shaking thumb.
“Give me the damn video,” Frank Hayes growled.
My mother stood near the closed garage door in her beige sweater and pearls, both hands raised like she wanted to stop the room without choosing a side. Her face was pale, but not surprised. That was what hurt first. Not my shoulder. Not my cheek. Her face.
“Rebecca,” she whispered, “just delete it.”

I looked at her, breathing hard. The phone was pressed against my chest like it was the last solid thing in the world. “You already knew.”
My father stepped closer. His tan work jacket smelled like rain, gasoline, and the motel parking lot I had followed him to. “You should have minded your own business.”
Then his eyes dropped to my phone.
The screen was blurred under the cracked protector, but the small red dot was still glowing.
He froze.
The side garage door opened behind him. Detective Ethan Cole stepped in with a patrol officer at his shoulder.
“Step away from her.”
For one beautiful, terrifying second, my father looked like a man waking up inside the consequence he thought he had outrun.

I raised the phone, my hand trembling.
“You just confessed.”
