Chapter 7 - The Sovereign on His Knees

Dante Moretti had never run in his life.
He had walked through burning warehouses in Queens; he had stood unflinching in the crosshairs of federal snipers; he had sat across from rival dons while their bodyguards racked the slides of automatic weapons. He was the undisputed king of New York’s five boroughs, an immovable monolith of violence and absolute control.
Yet as he crossed the living room toward the private elevator vestibule, he was not walking. He was stumbling, his leather dress shoes skidding against the slick marble, his hands outstretched like a blind man grasping for an anchor in a hurricane.
"Elena! Wait!" he roared, his voice cracking into a high, desperate register that none of his lieutenants had ever heard.
Elena did not flinch. She did not accelerate her movement. With calm, deliberate grace, she stepped backward across the threshold of the elevator cabin, her leather travel bag resting against her boots. She raised her right hand, her slender finger hovering directly over the brass door-close toggle.
Before her finger could depress the switch, Dante threw his massive, six-foot-two frame into the gap.
His heavy combat-trained forearm slammed into the rubber safety seal of the elevator door, the pneumatic sensor beeping once in alarm before retracting the heavy sliding panels. He stood in the narrow opening, towering over her, his broad shoulders heaving, his black dress shirt soaked with cold sweat.
His face was completely shattered. The dark stubble along his jawline was stark against his ghostly, blood-drained skin, his gray-blue eyes wild, bloodshot, and streaming with hot, unashamed tears that tracked through his beard.
"You can't go," Dante breathed, his chest rattling as he fought for oxygen. "Elena... look at me. You have my children inside you. You are my wife. This is your home."
Elena looked up at him. She was five inches shorter than him, entirely unarmed, wearing a thrift-store coat and carrying thirty pounds of luggage. Yet standing inside the mirrored box, she looked down upon the mob boss like a sovereign inspecting a ruined beggar.
"I am not your wife, Dante," Elena said, her hazel eyes steady, cold, and clear as arctic ice. "My ring is on that table beside our wedding portrait. The woman who wore it died three months ago while you were dining at the Carlyle with Bianca."
"I’ll kill her," Dante whispered, the words tearing from his throat with violent, terrifying sincerity. His hands reached toward the doorframe, his knuckles white against the brass trim. "I’ll kill her family. I’ll burn the Russo terminals to the waterline tonight. I’ll wipe their name off the docks. She was nothing, Elena! She was a transaction! A distraction! I swear to you on my life—"
"That’s your answer to everything, isn't it?" Elena interrupted softly, her voice devoid of anger, carrying only a profound, suffocating disgust. "Blood. Threats. Burning docks. You think your violence can pay for seven years of silence? You think killing a mistress will make my babies forget that their father walked through that door with her hand on his chest?"
Dante flinched as if she had driven an iron spike through his sternum.
Slowly, agonizingly, the most feared man in the American underworld began to break.
His knees, trembling violently beneath his tailored trousers, gave way. The six-foot-two sovereign who had never bowed his head to a judge, a priest, or a cartel boss sank downward, his knuckles dragging down the mirrored walls of the elevator, until he was kneeling on the cold marble floor at her feet.

He was on both knees, right across the threshold of the elevator, his massive hands reaching out to gently, reverently grasp the hem of her black wool coat. He pressed his bearded forehead against the rough fabric of her knees, his broad shoulders shaking with deep, volcanic sobs that echoed off the brass paneling.
"Don't take them," Dante wept, his voice muffled against her coat, his tears soaking through the black wool. "Elena... don't take my babies into the dark. Punish me. Take my money. Put a gun to my head and pull the trigger. But don't take them away from me."
