Chapter 5 - The Sonogram in Black and White

The thermal paper was cool between Dante’s calloused, scarred fingers, yet it felt as though it were burning through his skin, scorching straight down into his marrow.

His eyes scanned the header printed in clean, digital typography across the top of the scan:

PRESBYTERIAN WEILL CORNELL – CENTER FOR ADVANCED REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE

PATIENT: MORETTI, ELENA

DATE: YESTERDAY – 09:14 AM

GESTATIONAL AGE: 8 WEEKS, 4 DAYS

Beneath the technical metrics, nestled inside the grainy, high-contrast blackness of the pelvic scan, were two distinct, perfectly formed gestational sacs. Inside each dark pocket of fluid sat a tiny, translucent curve of living tissue—two nascent, fragile miracles, anchored deep within the body of the woman he had just ordered to pack her bags.

The color did not merely drain from Dante’s face; it was ripped away, leaving his olive skin the sickly, translucent gray of dry bone beneath his trimmed stubble.

His knees, which had never buckled under gunfire or betrayal, felt hollow, as if the ground beneath the Calacatta marble had dissolved into an open grave. His broad chest hitched in a sharp, stuttering breath that tore at his lungs. The heavy platinum Patek Philippe on his wrist ticked loudly, every second sounding like an executioner’s axe striking an iron block.

Beside him, Bianca leaned forward slightly, peering over his arm at the image.

Her breath seized in her throat. The smug, territorial triumph that had defined her entire evening evaporated in a single, devastating heartbeat. Her jaw dropped slack, her painted red lips parting in a silent, horrified gasp as she took in the medical header and the two unmistakable crescent shapes on the screen.

"No..." Bianca whispered, her voice a thin, panicked wail that barely cleared her lips. She took two stumbling steps backward, her high heels catching on the hem of her crimson gown, her hands flying to her mouth. "Dante... no... she’s lying. She bought that. She had someone forge it to trap you—"

"Shut your mouth," Dante rasped.

The command was so quiet, so devoid of volume, yet so heavy with subterranean, homicidal finality that Bianca’s throat snapped shut instantly. She pressed her back against the limestone wall, trembling violently, realizing for the first time that the man beside her was not a protector she had won, but a monster whose cage she had just unlocked.

Dante looked down at the image again.

Eight weeks.

His mind raced backward through time with the violent, sickening speed of an avalanche. Eight weeks ago was the week of the Saint Gennaro festival. The week he had come home at four in the morning, his knuckles split from an interrogation in the docks, exhausted and reeking of cordite. Elena had met him in the hallway without a word of judgment. She had washed his hands in warm water, dressed his cuts, and held him in their king-sized bed while the city burned outside their windows.

He had kissed her that morning with a desperate, hungry possessiveness, burying his face in her chestnut hair, whispering against her collarbone that she was his anchor.

And while he had spent the subsequent two months dining with Bianca in private rooms at Le Bernardin, while he had ignored Elena’s quiet calls and left her messages unread, she had been sitting alone in cold medical waiting rooms on York Avenue. She had undergone the blood draws alone. She had climbed onto the examination table alone. She had stared at the overhead monitor, listening to the impossible, miraculous rhythm of new life, while her husband was across town buying emerald bracelets for a syndicate heiress.

At the entrance corridor, the private elevator chimed.

The brass indicator light illuminated: CABIN ARRIVED.

The double doors slid open with a soft, mechanical hum, revealing the mirrored interior and the polished brass handrails.

Elena did not step inside immediately. She paused on the threshold, her hand resting firmly on the handle of her dark travel bag. She did not drop her head. She did not sob.

Slowly, deliberately, Elena turned her head over her shoulder.
