Chapter 1 - THE LATE-NIGHT VACUUM AT BEACON HILL

The rain drummed incessantly against the grand, arched bay windows of the historic Beacon Hill mansion, casting long, liquid shadows across the mahogany paneling of the private study. It was nearly 2:00 a.m. in downtown Boston, and the expansive estate lay draped in a heavy, suffocating quiet. This particular room, situated at the deep end of the second-floor gallery, was off-limits to everyone on the staff. It served as the inner sanctum for Roman Duca, thirty-eight, one of the most feared and powerful figures operating in Boston’s criminal underworld. Standing tall with dark hair slicked back and wearing a sharp, tailored dark suit with an open-collar white shirt, Roman governed his empire with ruthless precision and quiet, icy control.
As Roman pushed open the heavy oak doors of his private office, he stopped dead in his tracks. The low, resonant hum of an industrial vacuum cleaner filled the dimly lit space.
Standing in the center of the plush Persian rug was Mia Harper, a six-year-old girl with long, slightly messy brown hair. She wore a simple cream-colored cotton dress that had become frayed and smudged with dust along the hem. Her small, delicate hands were red and chapped from hours of handling harsh cleaning solutions and rough fabrics. Tied securely across her chest and wrapped around her torso was a faded blue woolen shawl, cradling her fourteen-month-old baby sister against her back. The baby was fast asleep, her small head resting lightly against Mia’s shoulder blade, rising and falling with rhythmic breaths as the little girl strained against the weight of the machine.
Mia heaved the heavy steel nozzle forward with both hands, her tiny frame trembling under the physical exertion. She leaned close to the machine, her voice barely audible over the motor’s whir as she whispered encouragingly to herself and her sleeping sister.

"We have to finish before Mr. Duca gets home," Mia whispered, her voice laced with innocent terror. "If the floors aren't clean, Mommy loses her job. We have to finish..."
Unbeknownst to the girl, Roman stood directly behind her, his looming shadow stretching across the rug under the dim ambient light of the desk lamp. His dark eyes narrowed as he took in the scene—a child doing heavy labor in his sanctuary at two in the morning.
