Chapter 7 - The Siding at 63rd

The siding at 63rd Street was a forgotten relic of Chicago’s industrial past, hidden between an overgrown embankment and a row of abandoned meatpacking plants.

A single, heavily reinforced freight car sat on the rusted track inside a darkened corrugated metal shed.

When Evelyn inserted the silver key fob into the shed's control box, the heavy steel doors rolled upward with a low, mechanical groan, revealing a fully powered, self-contained mobile medical bay built directly inside a modified industrial container.

"Your mother didn't just hide you, Harper," Evelyn said in awe as she stepped inside the climate-controlled car, looking at row after row of medical monitors, satellite communications arrays, and independent power generators. "She built a mobile fortress twelve years ago and left it waiting on a private track."

The team moved Ethan quickly from the ambulance van into the freight car’s central intensive care bed. The twin infants were placed in climate-controlled cradles built directly into the side wall.

Dr. Aris immediately hooked Ethan’s monitors into the freight car’s main power grid. The soft, rhythmic beep... beep... beep of his heart monitor filled the quiet room.

I sat beside his bed, taking his cold, scarred hand in mine.

His fingers twitched slightly.

"Harper..." a dry, raspy whisper escaped his lips.

I leaned in close. "I'm here. We’re safe. We’re on the train."

Ethan’s eyelids fluttered open, his pale blue eyes cloudy with pain and anesthesia, but as they focused on my face, a tiny, weak smile touched the corner of his mouth.

"You... you look just like her," he whispered, his grip tightening faintly around my hand. "You have Maya’s courage."

"Why didn't you come for me sooner?" I asked, tears finally swelling in my eyes, dripping down my nose, splashing onto his hospital gown. "I waited for twelve years for someone to come."

"I was protecting you, my sweet girl," Ethan choked out, a drop of clear moisture leaking from the corner of his eye. "Every day I didn't see you was a day you stayed alive. But now... now the world knows who you are."

May you like

He looked toward the cradles where the twins lay sleeping.

"You have to lead them, Harper," Ethan said, his voice growing stronger with desperate conviction. "You carry the key. You are the eldest daughter of the House of Grant."
