Chapter 5 - Beneath the Collar

As the Female Officer slowly raised her right hand toward her collar, the atmosphere around the memorial wall shifted dramatically.
Crawford’s smile vanished completely. The instinctual warning system inside his military training, long buried under his arrogance, suddenly began to flare.
She did not unbutton her utility shirt. Instead, she slid two fingers smoothly beneath the stiff fabric of her folded collar, reaching into a hidden inner lining specifically tailored into the uniform.
With a slow, deliberate motion, she began drawing out a concealed metal device—a hidden insignia connected to her true, undisclosed authority.
The bright morning sun caught the very tip of the object as it emerged from beneath the cloth. Only the first metallic edge became visible—a high-polish, dark silver finish, distinctly custom-crafted, unlike standard-issue brass or rank insignia. It was an emblem recognized only at the highest tiers of joint-command intelligence and special operations oversight.
In the second row of white folding chairs, a heavily decorated Senior Marine—a Master Gunnery Sergeant with grey hair and a chest full of ribbons—suddenly froze. His eyes locked onto the metallic edge creeping out from her collar.
His face turned instantly pale. Without thinking, the old veteran stood up from his folding chair, his knees knocking against the metal frame with a loud, sharp clatter that startled the men sitting next to him.

"Jesus Christ..." the Master Gunnery Sergeant muttered under his breath, his hands stiffening at his sides.
Crawford didn't see the older Marine stand, but he felt the sudden shift in the air. His eyes were glued to the tiny sliver of metal emerging from beneath the woman's collar.
