Chapter 3 - A Public Confrontation

Crawford stepped even closer, pivoting his body to position himself between her and the memorial wall, deliberately making the confrontation public. He wanted the surrounding Marines to see him taking charge, exposing what he believed to be an outsider or an unauthorized pretender.
"You don't have the authority to order me," Crawford said, his voice carrying a sharp, commanding edge meant to intimidate. He held her arm firmly, asserting physical dominance in front of the growing audience of spectators.
The Female Officer did not blink. She lowered her eyes briefly, taking a calm, deliberate look at his knuckles white with tension against her sleeve. Then, she raised her eyes back up, looking directly into Crawford's eyes with an intense, unshakeable focus.
"Let go," she repeated.
The words were spoken with absolute stillness. There was no tremor in her breath, no strain in her jaw, no sign of elevated heart rate.
Across the grass aisle, several senior Marines stopped talking altogether. A Gunnery Sergeant with three combat deployments on his ribbon rack leaned forward in his white folding chair, his brows furrowed in deep concern. He recognized that look. It was not the look of a frightened subordinate or an embarrassed civilian—it was the look of someone who was measuring a threat and deciding precisely how much effort it would take to neutralize it.
Crawford, however, was too blinded by his own righteous arrogance to read the subtle warning signs. He saw only a woman in plain fatigues refusing to submit to his rank.
He let out a short, dismissive laugh, turning his head slightly to glance at the seated Marines, inviting them to share in his contempt.
"Look at you," Crawford sneered, gesturing with his free hand toward her unadorned utility coat and the neatly folded patrol cap tucked tightly beneath her arm. "Where's your insignia?"
"Secured," she answered instantly, her voice flat and unbothered.
Crawford laughed again, louder this time, theatrical and performative.
May you like
"Secured?" he mocked. "You come onto this post, stand by our wall during a solemn service, and expect us to believe you're an officer?"
The Female Officer’s expression remained completely calm, her eyes fixed on his with unwavering patience.
