Chapter 2 - The Sorrento Secrets

Julien Sterling dropped his briefcase onto the center island table, the heavy leather thudding loudly against the granite counter.
He dropped to his knees right into the sea of broken glass, ignoring the sharp crystal edges cutting into his trousers. He wrapped his massive wool coat around Lily's ice-cold shoulders, pulling his daughter tightly against his chest.
"Daddy's here, Lily," Julien murmured, his voice thick with a raw, long-suppressed emotion. "I'm here, baby. You're safe."
"Daddy... Maria saved me," Lily sobbed, finally letting the tears burst through her freezing eyes. She pointed her small hand toward the housekeeper, who was groaning softly on the floor, clutching her bleeding temple. "Vanessa locked me in the big freezer. She told me I was going to freeze solid."
Julien turned his head slowly. The relief in his face vanished, replaced by an expression so cold and lethal that even Vanessa took two steps backward, bumping against the counter edge.
"Is this true, Vanessa?" Julien asked, his voice terribly quiet.
"She's lying! She's a manipulative little brat!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice rising into an unhinged register as she pointed at the little girl. "She knocked over the crystal cabinet herself! Maria fell trying to catch it! I was trying to discipline her because she was being disrespectful about your late wife!"
"Daddy..." Lily held up the faded Polaroid photo between them. "Mommy is in this picture. Vanessa is in it too. It says Sorrento, 2018."
Julien took the small piece of film.
His eyes scanned the two faces on the deck of the boat—his deceased wife Eleanor, whose glowing smile had haunted his dreams for seven years, and Vanessa Vance, the woman he had married fifteen months ago under the impression she was a distant corporate associate introduced to him by his board of directors.
Julien’s breathing hitched. "Where did you get this?"
"It fell out of the velvet box inside the cabinet when it broke," Lily whispered. "There's a ring in there too."
Julien reached into the pile of shattered glass and picked up the small black velvet box. Inside rested a massive, oval-cut pink diamond ring—an heirloom that had belonged to Eleanor’s grandmother, a ring that had mysteriously vanished from the family vault forty-eight hours before Eleanor’s fatal car crash seven years ago.
Julien stood up slowly. Standing six-foot-three, he towered over Vanessa, the shadow of his coat completely engulfing her.
"You told me you didn't know Eleanor," Julien said, his voice dropping an octave into absolute darkness. "When you applied for the executive director position at Sterling Enterprises three years ago, you stated under oath that you had never crossed paths with the Vance or Sterling families prior to your interview."
"Julien, please... listen to me!" Vanessa begged, her hands shaking as she reached for his forearm. "Eleanor and I... we were just college acquaintances! We took a vacation together once! It didn't mean anything! I didn't tell you because I knew how much pain you were in after her accident! I didn't want to bring up bitter memories!"
"Where did you get her grandmother's ring, Vanessa?" Julien demanded, stepping so close she could feel the cold rain dripping from his collar.
Vanessa couldn't answer. Her lips trembled, but no sound came out.
"Dante!" Julien roared toward the foyer.
A tall, broad-shouldered security chief stepped into the kitchen through the front doors, followed by two armed private security guards in black suits.
"Sir?" Dante reported crisp, his hand resting near his belt.
"Escort my wife to the secondary guest wing upstairs," Julien commanded flatly. "Lock the doors from the outside. Strip her of her phone, her keys, and her access cards. If she attempts to step foot near my daughter or this floor, use whatever physical force is necessary."

"Julien! You can't do this to me! I'm your wife!" Vanessa screamed as Dante and his men grabbed her by her arms, dragging her back through the glass toward the grand staircase. "I have rights! You can't lock me away!"
Her shrieks echoed down the long marble hallways until a heavy wooden door slammed shut upstairs, leaving the kitchen in an awful, heavy silence.
