Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Light

Three months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea, casting sparkling diamonds of light across the wooden deck of a fifty-foot private yacht floating off the coast of Sorrento, Italy.

The warm breeze carried the scent of wild lemons, fresh salt air, and blooming bougainvillea from the cliffs above.

Julien Sterling stood near the bow of the ship, wearing a crisp white linen shirt and dark trousers, holding a small wooden box in his hand.

Beside him stood seven-year-old Lily, wearing a bright yellow sundress, her dark hair blowing gently in the wind. Her cheeks were full of healthy color, and her eyes held no lingering shadows of the dark freezer or the shattered mansion.

"Is this where Mommy was, Daddy?" Lily asked, holding her father's hand tightly.

"Yes, baby," Julien answered softly, looking out at the endless horizon of blue water. "This is where your mommy was happy. This is where she fought to protect us."

Behind them on the deck, Maria sat under a shaded canvas awning, holding a tray of cold lemonade and fresh Italian pastries, smiling warmly as she watched the father and daughter.

Vanessa Vance had accepted a full state-evidence plea deal six weeks ago, testifying extensively against Arthur Sterling and his global laundering network in exchange for a reduced fifteen-year sentence in a federal facility. Arthur Sterling himself was currently awaiting a triple-life sentence without the possibility of parole in a high-security federal penitentiary.

Julien knelt down beside Lily on the warm wooden deck.

He opened the wooden box in his hand. Inside lay the oval-cut pink diamond ring that had once belonged to Eleanor's grandmother.

Julien took his daughter's tiny left hand, gently sliding the heavy ring onto her ring finger. It was far too large for her tiny hand, so he slid a fine gold chain through the ring setting, looping it securely around her neck like a pendant.

The pink diamond caught the Mediterranean sunlight, flashing with brilliant, unbroken light against her yellow dress.

"Your mommy wanted you to have this, Lily," Julien whispered, kissing her forehead. "She wanted you to know that no matter how cold or dark the world gets, love is the one thing that never freezes."

Lily looked down at the glittering diamond resting against her heart, then wrapped her tiny arms tightly around her father's neck.

"I love you, Daddy," she whispered.

"I love you too, my sweet girl," Julien said, lifting her up into his arms as the yacht sailed smoothly across the clear, peaceful sea.

The dark days of the Sterling estate were over. The secrets were buried, the shadow was gone, and standing together in the bright Italian sunlight, father and daughter were finally home.
