Chapter 4 - THE ARRIVAL OF THE COLONEL

Twenty minutes passed in agonizing silence. The wind outside howled against the windowpanes, while inside, Eleanor wrapped Sofia in a warm wool blanket, sitting beside her and gently pressing a cool damp cloth to her split lip.

At 3:35 a.m., tires crunched over the gravel driveway outside.

A heavy vehicle door slammed shut in the dark. Heavy, deliberate footsteps approached the front porch, moving with a disciplined, rhythmic cadence.

Eleanor stood up immediately, walking into the foyer to unlock the deadbolt. As soon as the latch opened, the front door swung inward.

Standing on the threshold was Colonel Alexander Brooks.

At fifty-five, Alexander was a formidable presence. A decorated senior Army officer with thirty years of active service, he stood six-foot-two with broad shoulders, a strong jawline, and short hair heavily streaked with gray. He wore faded denim jeans, a dark tactical shirt, and an old olive-drab military field jacket that bore no rank patches, yet his posture radiated absolute, terrifying authority.

He stepped into the hallway, his cold gray eyes instantly scanning the house.

"Eleanor," Alexander said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that filled the room. "Where is she?"

"In the living room," Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "Alexander... it's bad."

Alexander moved past his ex-wife without another word, stepping into the living room.

His eyes fell upon Sofia sitting shivering on the couch, wrapped in the wool blanket, her torn white dress showing beneath the hem, her face beaten and bruised.

Colonel Alexander Brooks froze in his tracks.

For three long seconds, the hardened military commander—a man who had led men through violent combat zones across the globe—completely lost his breath. His hands, hanging by his sides, slowly clenched into tight fists, the veins along his forearms bulging against his skin.

He walked slowly toward the couch, dropping down to both knees on the carpet in front of his daughter. His massive, calloused hand reached out with absolute gentleness, taking Sofia’s small, bruised hand into his own.

"Baby girl..." Alexander murmured, his gravelly voice trembling with a rare, profound vulnerability.

Sofia looked up into her father’s eyes—eyes she hadn't seen up close since she was sixteen years old—and instantly broke into uncontrollable tears.

"Dad!" Sofia sobbed, leaning forward and burying her face into the collar of his old military jacket.
