Chapter 1 - THE KNOCK AT THREE A.M.

The suburban neighborhood was drowned in pitch-black silence, broken only by the cold autumn wind rustling through the oaks lining the residential street. It was exactly 3:00 a.m. Streetlamps cast long, pale pools of light over empty driveways and manicured lawns, illuminating a dark, silent world fast asleep.

At the end of a quiet cul-de-sac stood a modest two-story home. Inside, the house was dark save for a dim nightlight glowing in the upstairs hallway.

Suddenly, a sequence of weak, desperate thumps rattled the heavy oak front door.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Inside the master bedroom, fifty-year-old Eleanor Brooks snapped awake. She sat upright in bed, her brown hair tied back loosely, her chest heaving as she listened intently. The sound came again—fragile, erratic, like someone using their last remaining strength to fight against the night.

Eleanor pulled on a warm cotton robe over her simple nightwear, barefoot, and rushed down the wooden staircase. The cold linoleum floor chilled her toes, but maternal instinct drove her forward. She reached the front entry hall, flicked on the porch light, and unlocked the heavy deadbolt.

She pulled the door open.

Standing on the porch under the pale porch light was twenty-six-year-old Sofia Brooks.

Her appearance was horrifying. Sofia’s long brown hair, which had been styled into an elegant bridal updo just twelve hours prior, had fallen into wild, matted strands across her face. She was wearing her white silk wedding dress, but the delicate lace bodice was ripped open at the shoulder, the long train dragged in the mud, and her veil hung in shreds behind her.

Her skin was pale, her right eye swollen shut, her bottom lip split and crusted with dried blood. Non-graphic purple and blue bruises ringed both of her forearms and wrists—unmistakable finger marks where she had been forcefully held down.

Sofia’s knees buckled. She swayed forward, collapsing into the doorway.

"Mom..." Sofia gasped, her voice a ragged, terrified whisper as she shook violently. "Please..."

Eleanor caught her daughter in her arms, absorbing her weight, the scent of damp dirt, cheap perfume, and fear filling the foyer. Eleanor gasped, tears welling instantly in her eyes as she wrapped her arms tightly around her daughter's trembling body.

"Sofia! Oh my God, Sofia!" Eleanor cried softly, backing into the hall and pulling her daughter inside.

Before Eleanor could scream for help, Sofia grabbed her mother’s robe with bruised, trembling hands.

"Please..." Sofia pleaded, her dark eyes wide with unadulterated horror. "Don't call anyone. Don't call the police. Lock the door... please, lock the door!"
