Chapter 5 - THE ARRIVAL OF THE KING

A collective hush swept across the main dining room of Le Ciel.

Walking past the host podium, flanked by two discreet, plainclothes security guards, was Richard Blackwood.

At sixty-four, Richard was the undisputed sovereign of the Blackwood dynasty. He was a tall, imposing man with a full head of silver-gray hair, sharp aristocratic features, and an aura of absolute, terrifying authority that commanded instant submission in every boardroom in North America. He wore a perfectly tailored gray three-piece suit, a dark silk tie, and carried a sleek, vintage dark leather document case under his left arm.

He didn't look at the waiters bowing as he passed. He didn't look at the wealthy socialites nodding in greeting. His sharp, steel-blue eyes were fixed entirely on Table 4.

The moment little Noah saw the silver-haired man walking toward them, the boy’s face lit up with an explosion of pure, unadulterated joy.

"Grandpa!" Noah cheered out loud, breaking away from Emma’s side and sprinting across the marble floor toward the powerful billionaire.

Ethan braced himself, expecting his cold, severe father to step aside or nod stiffly at the child.

Instead, Richard Blackwood did something that caused Ethan’s world to tilt on its axis once more.

The terrifying titan of industry dropped to one knee right on the polished marble floor of Le Ciel. He caught Noah in his broad arms, lifting the six-year-old boy into a warm, natural hug, chuckling softly as Noah wrapped his small arms around the billionaire's neck.

"Happy birthday, my little man," Richard murmured gently, pressing his cheek against Noah’s dark curls. "Did you like the private room I set up for you?"

"Yes!" Noah beamed, pulling back to show Richard a small wooden toy train he had been holding in his pocket. "Look! It has the red engine!"

"Just like we talked about," Richard smiled, his stern face softening into an expression of genuine, deep affection that Ethan had not seen directed at a family member in over twenty years.

Ethan stood frozen beside the table, staring at his father and his son with a look of absolute, shattered disbelief.

"Grandpa...?" Ethan breathed out, the word tasting like ash in his mouth.

Richard stood up smoothly, holding Noah’s small hand in his. He walked up to Table 4, his smile vanishing the moment his steel-blue eyes shifted from the child to his son and Victoria.

"Ethan," Richard acknowledged flatly, his tone returning to its familiar, authoritative frost.

Then, Richard looked at Emma. The severity in his eyes melted away, replaced by a look of quiet, respectful regret.

"Emma," Richard said softly. "Thank you for bringing him. I know how difficult this was for you."

"Richard," Emma replied, her voice steady, though her hands were still trembling slightly. "You promised me answers tonight."

Richard nodded once. He turned to a waiting private hostess standing near the entrance of the adjoining private dining suite.

"Sarah," Richard instructed calmly. "Please take Noah into the private room. Have the chef bring out the birthday cake and the ice cream we ordered."

"Yes, Mr. Blackwood," the hostess bowed, extending her hand toward the little boy.

Noah looked up at Emma. "Can I go, Mom? Can I have the cake?"

May you like

Emma offered her son a gentle, reassuring smile, nodding softly. "Go ahead, my sweet boy. I'll be right inside in a few minutes."

Noah skipped happily off toward the private suite, completely unaware that the adults he left behind were standing on the brink of an absolute catastrophe.
