Chapter 3 - THE BLACK CARD

Ethan reached into the breast pocket of his tailored black tuxedo. With a sharp, practiced movement, he pulled out his leather wallet, extracted a heavy, matte-black titanium payment card, and slapped it onto the center of the mahogany table, directly beside the white hydrangeas.

The heavy metal card hit the wood with a dull, resonant clack.

"How much, Emma?" Ethan asked. His voice had returned to its harsh, cynical armor, though his hands trembled slightly as he rested them flat on the table. "How much did my father offer you to bring him here tonight? Name your price. Five hundred thousand? A million? I’ll double whatever check he promised you if you take the boy, get on a plane, and never step foot in New York again."

Emma stared at the matte-black card sitting on the table between them.

She didn't reach for it. She didn't flinch. A bitter, sad smile touched her lips, her eyes filled with an unbearable weight of old memories.

"Keep it, Ethan," Emma said softly.

Ethan let out a harsh, barking laugh that carried no humor—a sound of pure, bitter validation. He leaned across the table, his broad shoulders casting a shadow over her.

"Keep it?" Ethan mocked, his gray eyes flashing with dark satisfaction. "You said something remarkably similar seven years ago, Emma. Right before you cleared out your apartment in SoHo, closed your bank accounts, and accepted a wire transfer from the Blackwood family trust. You played the proud, independent woman back then, too. Right up until the check cleared."

Emma’s smile vanished. Her entire body went deathly still.

The temperature at the table dropped to absolute zero.

"I didn't take a dime from your family, Ethan," Emma said. Her voice was barely a whisper, but it carried a force that made the crystal glasses on the table vibrate.

"Don't lie to me!" Ethan snapped, his composure finally breaking as he slammed a heavy fist against the table edge. "I saw the bank records! I saw the signed release form bearing your signature! My father's lawyers handed me the file the morning after you walked out on me!"

"You don't know what happened seven years ago," Emma stated, her eyes locking onto his with an unyielding, terrifying honesty.

"I know you disappeared!" Ethan shouted, ignoring the turned heads of two nearby tables. "I know I came back from the Chicago conference to an empty apartment! I know I called you fifty times a day for three months! I know you took the money and erased yourself from my life!"

Emma stared at him. The ferocity in her eyes suddenly gave way to a strange, hollow horror. She took a step closer to the table, her hands resting on the back of Noah’s chair.

"You... you called me?" Emma asked, her voice cracking.

Ethan blinked, startled by the sudden shift in her tone. "What?"

"You called me?" she repeated, her voice rising with an agonizing, seven-year-old grief.

"Of course I called you!" Ethan roared. "I spent three weeks looking for you in every hospital, every hotel, every city in the tristate area! I nearly destroyed my own company trying to find where you went until my father showed me the signed agreement!"

Emma shook her head slowly, her face draining of all color until she looked as pale as the white hydrangeas beside her.

"My calls to you stopped connecting the night I left," Emma whispered, her eyes wide with a terrifying realization. "Every time I dialed your number, it went straight to an automated message saying the line was no longer in service. I came to your office in Midtown three times, Ethan. Your private security team turned me away at the lobby doors. They told me you had filed a restraining order."

Ethan’s jaw dropped. "What... what are you talking about? I never filed a restraining order. I never changed my number."

"I wrote you letters," Emma sobbed quietly, a single tear escaping her eye and tracing a path down her cheek. "I sent six registered letters to your penthouse. I told you I was pregnant. I told you I was scared. I told you I wasn't taking the money your father's lawyers offered me."

May you like

Ethan stood frozen, his breath catching in his chest as if he had been struck by a physical blow.

"I didn't block you, Ethan," Emma whispered, her dark eyes piercing his soul. "Someone blocked me from you."
