Chapter 7 - The Unseen Thread

The alarm system of the Plaza Hotel finally kicked in, its high-pitched electronic wail echoing through the dust-choked Grand Ballroom. Red strobe lights flashed rhythmically across the shattered marble floor, painting the piles of iron, broken crystal, and ruined tablecloths in a horrific crimson hue.

Dozens of wounded guests were being helped toward the grand foyer by panicked staff, but near Table 12, a quiet, terrifying vacuum had formed.

Elena slowly stood up, pulling Margaret Romano up with her. She kept one protective arm around the elderly matriarch’s shoulders, her sharp brown eyes never leaving the empty spot on the upper balcony where the silhouette had stood seconds before.

The Security Guard remained on one knee beside the fallen iron beam, his flashlight beam trembling against the polished floor.

"You saw him," Elena said. It wasn't a question. Her voice was flat, hard, and stripped of all servant deferment.

The guard swallowed hard, his jaw clenching as he slowly pushed himself to his feet. He looked at Elena, then at Margaret, his eyes darting nervously toward the surrounding crowd as if expecting another attack at any second.

"Get Mrs. Romano out of here," the guard said in a low, tense whisper, leaning in close so the fleeing guests couldn't hear. "Don't go through the main lobby. Use the service exit behind the kitchen."

Margaret grabbed the guard’s lapel with surprising strength for a woman who had just survived a building collapse. "Who was that up there, Donald?" she demanded, recognizing the security chief. "What did you see on that beam?"

Donald, the security chief, didn't answer her directly. Instead, he reached into his tuxedo jacket, pulled out a encrypted silver security keycard, and shoved it into Elena’s dust-covered hands.

"The basement maintenance room," Donald whispered urgently. "Sub-level three. The structural monitoring server is down there. If someone tampered with the dome's tension sensors, the log files will be on that local drive. Take her there and lock the door from the inside until the federal marshals arrive."

"Donald—" Margaret started.

"Go! Now!" Donald snapped, turning around to intercept two frantic hotel managers who were sprinting toward the disaster site.
