Chapter 5 - The Weight of Iron

Through the dense cloud of rising dust and falling glass splinters, Elena remained crouched over Margaret Romano. She covered the older woman’s head and neck with her own body, taking the brunt of showering glass fragments across her gray uniform coat and back.

THUD!

With a bone-rattling vibration, a massive six-foot section of the primary iron support beam plummeted from the ceiling, slamming into the marble floor less than two feet from where Elena and Margaret lay pinned against the wall. The impact cracked the floor tiles, sending stone shards flying.

Silence fell over the immediate impact zone, broken only by the hiss of severed HVAC pipes, distant screaming, and the patter of minor glass fragments settling on ruined tablecloths.

Elena slowly raised her head, coughing through the thick plaster dust. Her light gray uniform was covered in gray powder and microscopic glass fibers, but she was alive. She looked down at Margaret. The silver-haired woman was gasping, pale and shaken to her core, but completely unharmed thanks to Elena’s violent intervention.

"Are you alright, Mrs. Romano?" Elena asked, her voice raspy as she helped the matriarch sit up.

Margaret looked at the crushed table two feet away, then looked at the young waitress kneeling beside her. Her hands trembled violently as she gripped Elena’s apron. "You... you saved my life," Margaret whispered, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks.

Behind them, heavy boots rushed across the debris-strewn floor.

The Security Guard burst through the dust cloud, his tuxedo jacket torn, his face a mask of shock and panic. He looked at Margaret, breathed a massive sigh of relief, then turned his gaze to the massive iron support beam embedded in the shattered marble next to them.

He dropped to his knees beside the fallen beam. "Is everyone okay? EMS is on their way!" he yelled, his voice shaking.

As he reached out to steady himself on the broken end of the iron beam, his fingers brushed against the fracture point where the metal had separated from the main dome ring. He paused. He pulled out his small security tactical flashlight and clicked it on, shining the bright white beam directly onto the freshly snapped iron edge.

He froze completely. All the air seemed to leave his lungs.

Elena, wiping dust from her eyes, immediately noticed his sudden, rigid immobility.
