Chapter 9 - THE BLOODLINE AND THE LEVIATHAN

Claire slowly walked down the upper steps, stopping halfway down the staircase, placing herself between Adrian and little Emma. She looked down at the five-year-old girl in the sapphire-blue dress, her expression filled with a fierce, protective love.
"She’s your daughter, Adrian," Claire said, her voice dropping into a steady, solemn vow. "I was two months pregnant the night I staged the crash near the cliffs."
Adrian felt as though the air had been kicked from his lungs. He looked from Claire’s face down to Emma, who was watching her mother with wide, curious eyes.
"My... my daughter?" Adrian stammered, dropping to his knees on the wooden step, his posture completely collapsing under the weight of the revelation. "I have a daughter?"
"Your father's associates, Adrian," Claire explained, her eyes glossy with tears. "The Vanguard Syndicate. When your father died, they didn't just want his assets—they wanted to eliminate his bloodline so nobody could challenge their control of the holding board. They threatened to kill the baby in my womb if I didn't disappear forever."
Claire reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted memory drive, holding it out toward him.

"I spent seven years in this village hiding her," Claire continued, her voice trembling. "I forged the dental records with the coroner's help, I took a new identity, and I built this house. But I kept your key, Adrian. I kept your picture under my pillow every single night."
Adrian looked at his wife, then reached down, pulling little Emma gently into his arms. The child didn't pull away; she wrapped her small arms around his neck, resting her head against his broad shoulder as if she had known him her entire life.
