Chapter 6 - THE SHADOW AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS

Emma’s face instantly lit up with a brilliant, joyful smile. She turned away from the locked door, stepping toward the base of the staircase, her sapphire-blue dress swishing against her knees.

"That’s Mommy!" Emma called out happily, looking over her shoulder at Adrian. "I told you she wasn't dead, Grumpy!"

Adrian remained frozen at the bottom of the stairs, anchored to the hardwood floor by a sheer, paralyzing shock. In his right hand, his fingers tightened so hard around Claire’s old photograph that the paper tore slightly down the middle.

Slowly, step by step, a figure moved along the second-floor hallway toward the open doorway at the top of the stairs.

A faint, elegant female shadow fell across the sunlit wall of the landing. The silhouette showed a woman with long, cascading hair, wearing a soft cardigan over a simple dress. She stopped just behind the doorframe, her body partially concealed by the warm light pouring through the upper window, keeping her face hidden in the soft amber glare.

Adrian stared upward, his jaw locked, his chest heaving as tears finally spilled over his dark lashes, tracking down his stubbled cheeks.

He looked at the shadow standing at the top of the stairs, then down at the silver key in Emma's small hand, and finally at the torn photograph in his grip.

In that final, silent, breathtaking beat, the terrifying reality settled deep into Adrian Vale’s soul: the woman he had mourned, the woman whose death had destroyed his heart for seven years, had never died in that cold ocean.

And as the shadow on the landing shifted half an inch closer to the light, Adrian realized that the life he thought he knew was merely a cover story—and the true mystery of Claire's identity was only just beginning.
