Chapter 6 - Three Lives Came Out
Cynthia lost emergency guardianship before the hearing ended.
She was later charged in connection with child abandonment, financial exploitation, false reporting, and misuse of trust funds. Her attorney withdrew after learning she had concealed the traffic footage and emails.
The court appointed the children’s former school counselor, Rebecca Hayes, as temporary guardian while extended family members were evaluated. Rebecca had known Ava and Eli before their parents died and had repeatedly questioned why Cynthia removed them from therapy.
The trust administrator froze every reimbursement.
More than half of the stolen funds were recovered from accounts Cynthia believed investigators would never find.
Gray remained at the county animal hospital for six days. He needed fluids, treatment for his paws, and regular meals. Every morning, Ava called the clinic.
On the seventh day, Rachel drove the children to visit him.
Gray heard Ava before he saw her.
He pulled the technician across the room and pressed his head against the girl’s chest. Eli wrapped both arms around his neck.
Rebecca had already completed the foster application.
“You said three lives came out of that pipe,” she told Rachel. “I think they should stay together.”
Gray went home with Ava and Eli that afternoon.
