Chapter 4 - The Witness With Four Paws

Cynthia arrived at the hospital demanding custody.

She swept through the pediatric waiting area in a camel coat, followed by a family attorney and a local reporter she had contacted herself.

When she saw Ava holding Gray’s leash, her expression changed.

“That animal is dangerous.”

Gray moved between her and the children.

He did not bark.

He simply stood.

Eli gripped Rachel’s hand.

Cynthia pointed toward Ava.

“She is manipulating everyone again.”

Rachel stepped into her path.

“The children are under protective supervision.”

“I am their legal guardian.”

“Not tonight.”

Cynthia’s attorney requested the children’s immediate release. Rachel responded with the incident report, Ava’s statement, and one additional fact Cynthia had not expected.

A traffic camera stood two miles from the drainage field.

It had captured Cynthia’s SUV entering the access road Tuesday evening.

The vehicle left nine minutes later.

No children were visible inside.

Cynthia claimed she had been helping search.

The search was not reported until nearly three hours afterward.

Then animal control completed Gray’s examination.

Mud on his paws matched the convenience-store lot where a worker saw him collecting bread. His fur contained fibers from the children’s blanket. Veterinary tests showed he had eaten almost nothing for four days.

Gray had preserved every piece of food for Ava and Eli.

The dog Cynthia called dangerous had done what their legal guardian refused to do.

He kept them warm.

He found them food.

He stayed.
