Chapter 5 - THE EMBLEM AND THE PROMISE

"Get down!" Jack growled softly.

With lightning speed, Jack reached back, gently pushing Emma down onto the floor behind a reinforced steel end-cap display filled with heavy plastic building blocks. He stepped in front of her, leaning his massive body over the metal display to shield her entirely from the main aisle.

Around them, Walmart employees and shoppers began backing away in confusion and fear, noticing the sudden confrontation and the tense, military-like posture of the massive biker.

Crouched in the narrow safety beneath the display shelf, Emma looked up at Jack’s broad back. Her small hand reached out, her fingers touching the thick, embroidered leather patch on his vest—the detailed black raven with spread wings sitting above the words IRON RAVENS MC.

Jack turned his head slightly, looking down past his shoulder at her.

Emma looked directly into his eyes, her brown eyes filled with an overwhelming, desperate plea. Her small hands raised between them, signing three clear, precise words:

MOM SAID FIND YOU.

Jack snapped his head around completely, dropping back down to one knee beside the display shelf.

"Your mom knows me?" Jack asked, his voice thick with sudden, intense disbelief. "What's her name?"

Emma didn't sign a name. Instead, she reached into the small front pocket of her denim shorts with her trembling right hand.
