Chapter 9 - The Verdict

The audio file played through the courtroom speakers.

The cruel, harsh sound of Miranda’s voice filled the room:

“If you leave anything to Ethan in a independent trust, Richard, I will make sure the boy suffers every single day he lives under my roof. You won't be here to protect him, and your old man won't be able to stop me.”

The silence that followed the recording was absolute.

Judge Eleanor Vance took off her reading glasses and set them deliberately on her bench. She looked down at Miranda Carter with an expression of cold, unrelenting judicial fury.

"Mrs. Carter," Judge Vance said, her voice dropping an octave. "In my twenty years on the family court bench, I have rarely heard evidence as damning, cruel, and decisive as what has been presented in this room today."

Miranda stammered, reaching for her lawyer's arm. "Your Honor... that recording was taken out of context! I was stressed! I was taking care of a sick husband!"

"Silence," Judge Vance commanded sharply.

The judge picked up her pen, signing three separate legal documents with swift, decisive strokes.

"Effective immediately," Judge Vance ruled, "all parental rights and legal guardianship held by Miranda Carter over Ethan Carter are suspended pending full criminal prosecution."

Miranda gasped, putting her hand over her mouth as tears of anger spilled down her face.

"A permanent restraining order is hereby issued," Judge Vance continued. "Miranda Carter is ordered to stay a minimum of five hundred yards away from Ethan Carter, his school, and his residence. Law enforcement is instructed to enforce this order with immediate arrest upon any violation."

The judge looked across the courtroom at Elias and Ethan.

"Full legal, physical, and financial guardianship of Ethan Carter is hereby awarded to his grandfather, Elias Carter," Judge Vance declared. "The court further orders that the primary trust fund established by the late Richard Carter be placed under the sole trusteeship of Elias Carter and Arthur Sterling for the exclusive benefit of Ethan Carter until he reaches twenty-five years of age."

Judge Vance brought her wooden gavel down with a sharp, echoing BANG.

"Court is adjourned."
