Chapter 8 - Department 12

The courtroom of Department 12 was cold, formal, and quiet.
Judge Eleanor Vance—no relation to the defense attorney—sat behind the high wooden bench, reviewing the emergency petition for temporary custody and protection filed by Child Protective Services.
Sitting on the right side of the aisle was Miranda, flanked by Harold Vance and two associate attorneys.
Sitting on the left side was Elias, Ethan, Arthur Sterling, and social worker Sarah Vance. Standing near the back wall, in full dark navy uniform, was Officer Mark Reeves, present as a subpoenaed witness for the state.
"This is an emergency hearing regarding the temporary custody of Ethan Carter, age fifteen," Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing off the high wood-paneled walls. "Counsel, state your appearances."
Harold Vance stood up immediately, adjusting his tie. "Harold Vance for the respondent, Miranda Carter. Your Honor, this entire proceeding is an outrageous abuse of the legal system engineered by a bitter, estranged grandfather seeking to extort my client's estate."
"Is that so, Mr. Vance?" Judge Vance asked dryly, looking over her reading glasses. "And how do you explain the police reports, the paramedic evaluation, and the body camera footage showing extensive bruising on the minor child's upper body?"
"The bruises were self-inflicted, Your Honor!" Harold Vance declared confidently. "The boy has been experiencing severe emotional instability since his father's passing. My client was merely attempting to discipline a rebellious teenager who was engaging in self-harm!"
In the gallery, Officer Reeves shook his head in quiet disgust.
Arthur Sterling stood up slowly, picking up his leather briefcase.
"Your Honor," Arthur said, his voice deep and commanding. "We would like to introduce into evidence Court Exhibit A: the complete body camera recording from Officer Mark Reeves taken on the morning of the incident."
"Objection!" Harold Vance shouted.
"Overruled," Judge Vance stated flatly. "Play the video."
The courtroom lights dimmed slightly as the large flat-screen monitor on the side wall lit up.
The video played with crystal-clear clarity. The camera captured Miranda on the porch, shrieking at the officers, demanding Elias’s arrest. Then it showed Officer Reeves entering the home, where Ethan sat terrified on the couch—and it captured the precise moment Ethan raised his sleeve, revealing the dark, unmistakable hand-shaped grip marks across his arm.
Then, the video captured Elias stepping forward, his voice calm, steady, and protective: “Good. Now he can tell you himself.”
Judge Vance watched the screen intently, her brows furrowing into a dark line.
"Furthermore, Your Honor," Arthur Sterling continued, walking toward the bench, "we submit Court Exhibit B: a digital recording pulled from Richard Carter's private server six months ago, containing direct verbal threats made by the respondent against the minor child."

Miranda’s attorney turned his head sharply toward his client, his face suddenly going pale. "What recording?" he whispered frantically to her.
Miranda’s jaw dropped, her hands beginning to tremble on the defense table.
