Chapter 10 - THE UNTOUCHED SECRETS

Adeline Hayes stood rooted to the floorboards, her mind spinning into complete, terrifying chaos.

She looked from the embroidered 714 patch in the photograph to Elias Baron's pale, rigid face. The world she had built around her brother's memory—the sacrifice, the patriotic duty, the somber military honors—was disintegrating into a tangled web of lies, cover-ups, and criminal intrigue.

Evan sat up straight on the bed, his face pale as paper, clutching his bandaged wrist to his chest. "Addie... what does this mean? Was Daniel... was Daniel lying to us?"

"Daniel wasn't lying to you," Elias said softly, his voice carrying an absolute, heavy weight as he turned to look at the young boy. "Daniel was protecting you."

Elias carefully placed the silver picture frame back onto the dusty wooden nightstand, setting it down beside the glass of water with meticulous, gentle precision.

He turned back to Adeline. The cold mob boss who had entered the Chelsea apartment looking for a traitor now looked at the exhausted maid with a quiet, unyielding vow of protection.

"Your brother saved my life three years ago," Elias said, his voice steady and resolute. "Whether he was a soldier, a federal agent, or something far more complicated... he died keeping me alive. And he died trying to keep you safe."

Elias reached inside his heavy black overcoat. He pulled out a thick leather wallet, pulled out a stack of pristine hundred-dollar bills, and placed them quietly on the kitchenette counter beside the small, cheap eight-dollar box of bandages.

"Mr. Baron... no," Adeline stammered, stepping back. "I can't take your money—"

"This isn't charity, Adeline," Elias interrupted, his tone leaving zero room for argument. "This is a fraction of what was stolen from you. Starting today, you don't scrub floors at the mansion. You and your brother are moving to a secure residence on the North Side."

Adeline looked at the money on the counter, then up into Elias' dark, unreadable eyes.

"Why?" she whispered, tears glistening in her eyes. "Why are you doing this?"

Elias stepped toward the damaged apartment door, stopping at the threshold. He looked back over his shoulder, his dark eyes locking onto the silver picture frame on the nightstand one last time.

"Because whoever faked that death report in Jordan," Elias said, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute register, "whoever stole your brother's trust fund... is the same person who set up the ambush three years ago. And they think Daniel took his secrets to the grave."

Elias looked at Adeline, his expression dark with a looming, unstoppable war.

"Pack your things," Elias commanded quietly. "My men will be upstairs in ten minutes."

Without another word, the feared crime boss of Chicago turned and stepped out into the dim hallway, the heavy wooden door closing softly behind him, leaving Adeline and Evan in the quiet room, surrounded by the haunting remnants of a past that was only beginning to reveal its deadliest truths.
