Chapter 1 - SHADOWS AT THE SERVICE GATE

Before dawn, the air outside the stone walls of the sprawling Baron mansion was bitter, damp, and heavy with morning fog. The streetlamps along the perimeter cast long, pale yellow beams across the manicured grounds, illuminating the iron pikes of the outer security fence.
At four forty-five in the morning, the heavy iron service gate at the rear of the estate clicked softly.
Adeline Hayes stepped out onto the quiet sidewalk. At twenty-six, she was a night maid who had just completed a grueling twelve-hour shift inside the mansion. Her long brown hair was gathered into a loose, messy bun at the crown of her head, with a few soft strands sticking to her damp temples. Beneath a faded, oversized brown winter coat, she still wore her modest black-and-white maid uniform—a simple black cotton dress with a plain white collar and apron. Her face was pale, worn thin by chronic exhaustion, her jaw set with a quiet, stubborn pride.
As she pulled the heavy iron gate shut behind her, her left foot gave out slightly. A sharp, shooting pain radiated from her ankle up through her hip—a persistent, untreated injury from a fall six months ago. She winced, catching her balance against the cold stone pillar, before adjusting the straps of an old, frayed canvas backpack slung over her shoulders. She forced her gait to smooth out, suppressing her limp as she began walking toward the public bus stop two blocks away.
Across the narrow, tree-lined street, parked beneath the heavy shadow of an oak tree, sat a sleek black SUV. The vehicle’s engine was off, its tinted windows dark and impenetrable.
Inside the front passenger seat, one of Elias Baron’s trusted bodyguards leaned back, his eyes tracking Adeline’s silhouette as she moved down the fog-laden pavement. In the rear passenger seat, half-shrouded in darkness, sat Elias Baron himself.
At thirty-nine, Elias was a feared Chicago crime boss whose authority stretched across every dock, warehouse, and union hall in the district. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with dark swept-back hair, sharp aristocratic features, and cold, calculating eyes that rarely missed a detail. The dark collars of his tailored black suit and heavy dark wool overcoat were pulled high, but the intricate black ink of old mafia tattoos was still visible along his throat and tracing down to the knuckles of his broad hands.
"You still think she's leaking the routes?" the bodyguard asked in a low, raspy tone, adjusting his jacket over a shoulder holster. "She's just a house maid, Boss. Works the night shift, cleans the study, leaves before breakfast."
Elias did not answer immediately. His dark eyes remained fixed on the receding figure of the young woman in the oversized coat. For three weeks, rival crews had been intercepting high-value shipments along the southern supply corridors with terrifying precision. An internal audit pointed to information leaking directly from the private offices inside the mansion. Adeline was one of only three staff members who had unescorted access to those rooms during the late hours.
Elias leaned forward, the leather seat creaking softly under his weight.

"I'm going to find out," Elias said, his voice a low, commanding rumble.
He signaled the driver with a short tap of his knuckles against the center console. The driver turned the ignition, the heavy engine purring silently into life as the SUV pulled out from the curb, trailing the young maid into the pre-dawn darkness of the city.
