Chapter 8 - THE SHIFTING BALANCE

Roman stood in the quiet hallway of the east wing, the cold reality of Evelyn’s words washing over him like a wave of icy water.

He had expected to find a dying wife or a shameful affair. He had prepared himself to deal with a rival man or a legal dispute over property lines.

Instead, he was standing in a fortress built by his estranged wife—a woman who had taken the discarded casualties of his own brutal criminal empire and given them a home beneath the roof of his ancestral manor.

"You're running a safehouse for my dead soldiers' families," Roman stated, his voice devoid of its usual harshness, replaced by a profound, disorienting awe.

"I'm running a home, Roman," Evelyn corrected softly, leaning her shoulder against the doorframe. "Something you have never understood how to build. You know how to take territory. You know how to collect debts. You know how to make people afraid of you. But you don't know how to protect anything that matters."

Roman stepped closer to her. For the first time in nine years of marriage, he was looking at her not as a frail, sick girl he had married to satisfy his father's estate requirements, but as an absolute equal—a woman whose mind, courage, and resilience surpassed almost every man in his inner circle.

"And what happens when the Morettis find out this place exists?" Roman asked, his voice turning sharp and protective. "What happens when my enemies realize that the families of their dead rivals are living under my name at Grayhaven?"

Evelyn smiled—a small, dark, brilliant smile that chilled Roman to his core.

"They already know, Roman," Evelyn said smoothly.

Roman froze. "What?"

"Six months ago, Marco Moretti sent three of his men up the drive to scope out the estate," Evelyn explained casually, as if talking about a minor weather event. "They thought Grayhaven was still an abandoned ruin guarded by an old caretaker."

Roman’s hands clenched into tight fists. "What did you do?"

"Caleb and I had already installed a motion-sensor security grid along the perimeter fence," Evelyn replied. "Before Moretti's men even reached the carriage house, Caleb had disabled their engine block with a deer rifle from the roof, and Martha had alerted the State Police to an armed trespass on private property. The state troopers picked them up at the gate. Moretti lost three senior enforcers and a custom SUV without us ever firing a single shot into a human being."

She stepped closer to Roman, her blue eyes locking onto his with terrifying confidence.

"We don't need your muscle, Roman. We don't need your guns. We are far safer up here without you than we ever were with you."
