Chapter 10 - THE UNBROKEN FORTRESS

Evelyn looked down at his hand resting over hers. His palm was warm, rough, and calloused—the hand of a man who had spent his life building power through force.
"What are you doing, Roman?" Evelyn asked quietly.
"I am not signing these," Roman said, his voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable certainty.
Evelyn pulled her hand back smoothly, crossing her arms over her chest. "You don't get to choose, Roman. You gave up your right to this house—and to me—the night you walked out into that storm three years ago."
"I was a fool three years ago, Evelyn," Roman stated flatly, stepping closer to the desk until he was standing inches from her. "I thought strength was measured by how many men you commanded in the city. I thought power was holding territory in Buffalo."
He looked around the warm, glowing study.
"I was wrong," Roman said, his pale gray eyes softening with a rare, profound humility. "Power is what you built here. Strength is taking a ruin and turning it into an iron fortress that keeps the world out."
"This fortress was built to keep you out, Roman," Evelyn reminded him sharply.
"Then let me earn my way back in," Roman replied.
The words were spoken softly, but they carried the weight of a absolute vow.
Evelyn stared at him, her blue eyes wide with shock. In nine years of marriage, she had never heard Roman Calder ask for permission. She had never heard him admit a mistake. She had never seen him look at anyone with anything other than cold, terrifying command.
"The syndicate is coming for this region, Evelyn," Roman explained, his tone turning serious and protective. "The Morettis are moving north. Chicago is pushing into the lakes. This house is safe for now, but when the war breaks open, you will need more than a deer rifle and state troopers. You will need my network. You will need my firepower."
"And what do you need, Roman?" Evelyn asked softly.
Roman looked at her—really looked at her—for the first time in his life.
"I need a reason to come home," Roman said quietly.
Silence fell over the study. Outside, the blizzard howled against the heavy stone walls of Grayhaven Manor, driving white waves of snow across the frozen estate. But inside, the fire roared, the furnace hummed, and the house remained warm, safe, and unbroken.
Evelyn looked at the dark-suited man standing before her. She looked at the manila envelope sitting on the desk, then reached out, picked it up, and threw it directly into the open door of the roaring corner stove.
The paper caught fire instantly, curling into bright orange flames before dissolving into black ash.
Evelyn turned back to face Roman, a tiny, elegant smile touching her lips.

"The kettle is on, Roman," Evelyn said softly. "Take off your boots. You have three years of story to catch up on."
Roman looked at his wife, the icy steel in his chest finally melting away as he nodded, stepping out of his heavy boots and stepping into the warmth of the home he had finally returned to find.
