Chapter 7 - THE RECOGNITION OF A MELODY

Lily didn't answer with words. She turned her head slowly and glanced toward the steel workbench where her tiny black Bluetooth speaker sat playing its soft, acoustic tune.

The music had reached its bridge.

A soft, finger-picked guitar melody filled the quiet air of the garage, accompanied by the gentle, humming tone of a woman's voice singing without words—a quiet, intimate lullaby that sounded as if it had been recorded in a sunlit bedroom on an old tape deck.

Caleb’s head snapped toward the workbench.

The world around him seemed to lose all color, shrinking down to the tiny black box sitting beside his chrome wrenches.

His breathing stopped entirely.

He knew that melody. He didn't just know it; he had lived inside it. It was a custom acoustic track written and recorded by a woman who used to sit on the porch of the clubhouse every Sunday afternoon with an old wooden guitar, singing to the ocean breeze.

It was Audrey’s song.

A song that had never been published. A song that had never been put on the internet, released on an album, or played on a radio station. It existed on only one piece of physical media in the entire world: a tiny silver flash drive that Caleb had buried inside the leather saddlebags of his wife's black Harley-Davidson eight years ago—the very bike currently sitting under the dusty canvas tarp two feet to his left.

Caleb’s face changed completely.

The lingering awe from his moving foot was instantly swept away, replaced by a deep, shattering, emotional shock that turned his skin as white as chalk.

He whipped his head back toward the covered motorcycle, staring at the thick canvas shroud as if expecting a ghost to step out from beneath the black cloth.

"Where..." Caleb rasped, his eyes wide, his hands trembling so hard he had to grab the wheels of his chair to steady himself. "Where did you hear this song?"

Lily looked back at him, her brown eyes clear, deep, and completely untroubled by the storm crashing inside his soul.

"My mom gave it to me," Lily said softly.
