Chapter 6 - THE MIRACLE ON THE FOOTPLATE

"Caleb..." Big Bear whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood.

The word was barely audible over the music, but it carried across the garage like an electric shock.

Every single biker in the room stepped forward simultaneously. They didn't rush; they moved in a slow, hesitant circle around the wheelchair, their eyes glued to the dark wool blanket draped over Caleb's legs. Men who had survived gunshot wounds, knife fights, and high-speed crashes were trembling where they stood, afraid that if they breathed too loudly, the vision would dissolve into dust.

Caleb’s chest was heaving now, but he didn't make a sound.

He slowly, agonizingly reached down with his right hand. His scarred, tattooed fingers hovered two inches above his right knee, shaking violently. He had spent eight years in physical therapy halls, eight years undergoing spinal scans, eight years being told by the top neurologists in the country that the damage to his L1 vertebra was complete and permanent.

He touched his leg.

Through the heavy denim of his jeans, he felt something he hadn't felt in nearly a decade: a faint, deep, electric warmth pulsing beneath his palm.

He looked up slowly.

He didn't look at Big Bear. He didn't look at Tank or his club brothers. His eyes drifted across the floorboards until they locked onto the little girl standing in the middle of the shop.

Lily was no longer dancing.

She stood straight, her hands clasped loosely in front of her bright red hoodie, her long brown hair framed by the afternoon sunlight streaming through the high windows.

She wasn't wide-eyed with shock. She wasn't gasping. She wasn't looking at his boots with the terrified, superstitious awe that filled the eyes of the twelve hardened men around her.

She simply stood there, looking at Caleb with a soft, knowing, triumphant smile.

"See?" Lily said quietly.

May you like

Caleb’s mouth felt completely dry, like he had swallowed sand. He looked at her small, unblemished face, his dark eyes narrowing into two intense, burning points of focus.

"How..." Caleb choked out, his gravelly voice trembling so hard he could barely shape the words. "How did you know?"
