Chapter 20 - THE GUARDIAN’S VOW

A collective gasp rippled through the senior lieutenants. They looked between the baby, the silver pendant, and the pale face of Valerio Duca.

"Lorenzo’s daughter...?" one lieutenant whispered in disbelief. "Lorenzo had a child?"

Alessandro reached into his trench coat, pulling out the crumpled wire transfer documents from the bank vault along with Lorenzo’s worn leather journal. He slammed them down onto the center of the marble table directly in front of Valerio.

"Read them," Alessandro commanded softly.

Valerio didn't reach for the papers. He couldn't. His eyes were wide with sheer, unadulterated panic, his chest heaving as he realized his sixteen-month conspiracy had been torn apart in a single hour.

"Valerio Duca," Alessandro said, his tone dropping into a register of cold, absolute judgment that made every guard in the penthouse reach for their weapons. "You betrayed my brother. You took twenty million dollars from New York to ambush your own blood. And you tried to hand our city to Don Carmine."

The four other lieutenants immediately backed away from Valerio, pulling their suit jackets open and drawing their sidearms, pointing them directly at the old man's chest.

"Alessandro! Wait!" Valerio pleaded, falling to his knees on the marble floor, his hands raised in desperate surrender. "It wasn't just me! New York forced my hand! They threatened my family!"

"You are my family," Alessandro rasped, his dark eyes burning with an unforgiving fury. "And you destroyed it."

Alessandro turned his head slowly to Marco.

"Take him down to the subterranean vault," Alessandro ordered flatly. "Strip his titles. Strip his accounts. And make sure New York knows what happens to traitors in Chicago."

"No! Alessandro! Please!" Valerio screamed as Marco and two heavy enforcers grabbed his arms, dragging the weeping old man down the marble corridor toward the private elevator.

The heavy iron doors of the elevator slammed shut, drowning out Valerio’s cries, leaving the penthouse once again submerged in absolute, triumphant silence.

Alessandro stood at the center of the grand living room, surrounded by his remaining loyal lieutenants who bowed their heads in silent, total submission to his absolute rule.

He turned toward Elena.

Elena walked over to him, holding little Mia close against her chest. The baby looked up at Alessandro, letting out a sweet, happy giggle as she reached out her tiny hand to grab his dark silk tie once again.

Alessandro didn't pull away. He slowly lowered his broad frame, placing his large, tattooed hand over Mia’s small fingers, holding her hand gently against his chest.

He looked into Elena’s eyes, seeing the fear and uncertainty finally melt away, replaced by a deep, unshakeable trust.

"The war with New York starts today," Alessandro said softly, his voice carrying the immovable strength of a granite mountain. "But inside this penthouse, you and Mia will never be afraid again."

"Thank you, Alessandro," Elena whispered, tears of profound relief filling her dark eyes.

Alessandro stood tall, framing the mother and child beneath his massive silhouette against the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Chicago skyline. The storm outside raged on, but inside the fortress in the sky, the quiet guardian held his family close—a feared crime boss who had found his ultimate purpose in protecting the innocent blood of his legacy.
