Chapter 11 - THE FORTRESS IN THE SKY

The heavy iron gates of the penthouse private elevator locked with a deafening metallic chime that echoed down the marble hall. Across the eighty-story luxury tower in downtown Chicago, an invisible shield descended. Inside the high-ceilinged corridor, where sunlight streamed through floor-to-ceiling glass, the atmosphere shifted from high-stakes corporate enterprise to an impenetrable fortress.
Alessandro Duca stood at the epicenter of the marble hallway, holding eight-month-old Mia firmly against the lapel of his black three-piece suit. The tiny girl’s pink dress contrasted sharply against the dark fabric of his tailored vest, yet Alessandro held her with a natural, unyielding grip. His tattooed hand supported her small back, his heavy signet rings glinting in the midday sun.
Marco, his scarred face tight with shock, stood five paces away alongside three tactical guards clad in dark suits. Hands remained glued to concealed shoulder holsters, but no guard dared make a sudden movement. The aura surrounding Alessandro was absolute, lethal, and radiating an overwhelming protective instinct.
"Clear the floor," Alessandro commanded, his deep baritone cutting through the hum of the climate control. "Every service door, emergency stairwell, and ventilation shaft on this floor gets secondary biometric locks. I want armed guards posted inside the foyer twenty-four hours a day."
Marco swallowed hard, adjusting his black silk tie. "Boss... what about the staff? The catering crew, the dry cleaners, the maintenance engineers?"
Alessandro’s dark eyes flicked over to Elena, who remained frozen against the glass window, her pale-yellow housekeeping uniform wrinkled and her brown hair loose around her pale face.
"Fire them all," Alessandro declared without a second's hesitation. "Pay them six months' severance and sign non-disclosure agreements. From this second onward, no unvetted civilian steps foot on the penthouse floor. Elena is the only one who stays."
Elena’s lips parted in sheer astonishment. "Mr. Duca... you can't fire the entire domestic team. The maintenance alone—"
"I don't care about the maintenance," Alessandro interrupted, turning his sharp masculine features toward her. "I care about security. The New York families have eyes in every service agency in the Midwest. If they hear rumors that a child wearing the Duca bloodline pendant is residing in my home, they won't send lawyers. They will send hit teams."
Mia let out a small, cheerful babble, reaching up with her tiny fingers to pat Alessandro’s dark, tattooed jaw. The intimidating crime lord didn't flinch. Instead, his sharp features softened for a fraction of a second as he leaned his head down slightly, allowing the baby to grab his collar.
"Marco," Alessandro added, his tone hardening once more. "Bring up the private medical squad from the subterranean vault. I want a full pediatric health check performed on Mia in the master suite within the hour. No hospital records. No digital paper trail."
Marco bowed his head respectfully. "Understood, Boss. It will be done."

As Marco and the guards backed away toward the elevator bank, leaving the hallway in silent resolve, Alessandro turned to Elena.
"Follow me," he said, holding Mia securely as he walked toward the grand double doors of the master suite at the end of the sunlit corridor.
