Chapter 8 - THE FATHER ON THE CERTIFICATE

The midpoint arrived through Eli’s birth certificate.
Naomi obtained the long-form original from the state where he was born. The copy Mara carried listed the father as unknown. The original application contained an additional sealed paternity acknowledgment that had never been finalized because one signature was missing.
The named father was Daniel Mercer.
Claire knew him.
Daniel was a former analyst at Jonathan’s investment group. He had resigned under contentious circumstances seven years earlier after alleging irregular valuations tied to the Blake estate. Jonathan told Claire the man stole confidential information and threatened to sell it to competitors.
Claire believed that too.
Daniel’s name had appeared in Sophia’s financial notes before she disappeared, but Claire never connected him to the later allegations because Jonathan described him as a separate business problem.
Now he might be Eli’s father.
Mara admitted Sophia met Daniel after leaving Hartwell’s residential system. He helped her obtain financial records and navigate the fragmented identity documents left by confinement. Their relationship developed later.
Eli was born several months after Daniel disappeared.
Claire looked up sharply.
“He disappeared too?”
Mara nodded.
Not into a facility, according to the limited evidence. Daniel stopped attending work, closed his bank accounts and left behind a message saying he needed to leave the country.
His family believed he fled after financial trouble.
Sophia believed someone forced him out.
The same pattern repeated around anyone who found the Blake records.
The midpoint reversal was not simply that Jonathan had made Sophia disappear to take her inheritance. He had spent years neutralizing people who tried to reopen the underlying transactions. Sophia escaped physically but remained financially and legally trapped, while Daniel’s involvement provided another route to the original fraud.
Claire’s new objective became finding Daniel as well as Sophia.
She wanted to know what he discovered that frightened Jonathan enough to isolate two adults and pursue a child.
Naomi obtained Daniel’s old employment arbitration file. It showed he challenged valuations used to support a major redevelopment financing package. One asset came from Eleanor Blake’s estate. Daniel believed the property was worth nearly twice the figure listed when the sisters’ interests were allocated.
The undervaluation allowed Jonathan’s group to acquire an interest cheaply.
Sophia discovered the discrepancy.
Claire had unknowingly approved the allocation.
That implicated her signature in a second way. Even if she did not participate knowingly, the family transaction might require unwinding because she authorized it while relying on false valuation information.
The personal consequence hit Claire immediately. She had profited from Jonathan’s later success. Her home, travel and charitable donations were funded partly by money flowing from a fraud committed against her sister.
There was no easy way to restore Sophia without examining Claire’s own wealth.
She told Naomi to proceed anyway.
The new evidence came from an archived email Daniel sent shortly before he vanished. He wrote to Sophia:
If anything happens, check the board minutes from the week your mother died. The asset transfer was approved before probate opened.
Claire stared at the date.
Her mother had died on a Tuesday.
The relevant board meeting occurred on Thursday.
Jonathan had told Claire he became involved in the Blake company only after the funeral.
The records suggested he began moving pieces before Eleanor’s estate was formally administered.

The underlying conspiracy had started before Sophia’s disappearance and perhaps before Eleanor’s death.
The question became whether their mother knew.
