Chapter 11 - THE SECOND FACILITY

The facility outside Albany called itself Ridgeview Wellness Center. Its website showed smiling patients walking wooded paths, private rooms with soft bedding, and reassuring paragraphs about individualized treatment. The legal entity behind it was linked to Hartwell through management contracts and a property lease.
Investigators obtained an emergency order to preserve records and verify whether Sophia was inside.
Claire waited at Naomi’s office while the search proceeded because officials made clear her presence could complicate interviews. She stared at the joined brooches on the table and remembered every time Jonathan said Sophia might not want to be found.
She had begun to hate the way that sentence made absence sound like consent.
Sophia was not at Ridgeview.
She had been there.
Intake records showed a woman admitted under an emergency psychiatric evaluation with fragmented identity documents, found near the Hudson Valley legal-aid office in acute distress. Her admission was signed by a physician who had previously worked at Hartwell.
The stated concern was delusional fixation involving family persecution and fear that her child would be abducted.
Someone had turned the reason she sought protection into the reason to confine her.
But Sophia escaped before investigators arrived.
A nurse reported she forced open a service door during a staff change, leaving behind medication she refused to take. The nurse had quietly permitted the exit because Sophia repeatedly begged her to call a lawyer outside the facility’s approved list.
Claire felt relief and fresh terror together.
Sophia was free.
Sophia was still running.
The chapter’s apparent defeat arrived when Jonathan filed for emergency protective orders concerning Claire. His attorney alleged she was experiencing a grief-related crisis, had become convinced a missing sister was secretly alive, and was associating with individuals exploiting her wealth.
He attached messages Claire sent him over several years during anniversaries of Sophia’s disappearance.
I keep thinking I saw her.
What if she’s somewhere nearby?
I can’t stop dreaming she’s trying to call.
Claire read the filing with growing horror.
Jonathan was using genuine expressions of grief to make the present evidence look like another episode.
The strategy had worked on Sophia.
Now he was trying it on Claire.
Naomi prepared a response grounded in independent proof: Eli’s kinship test, Sophia’s recent photograph, Hartwell records, Ridgeview intake, and Jonathan’s documented connection to the estate transactions. The court declined to issue immediate restrictions but scheduled a hearing.
Jonathan’s plan was no longer private.
He needed institutions to choose his polished version over the sisters’ documented one.
Then Mara found the overlooked clue in Sophia’s satchel.
A tiny metal key had been sewn into the lining near the repaired handle. Mara never noticed it because the seam looked like Sophia’s old stitching. Claire recognized the red thread immediately.
The key carried a storage-unit number.
Not Hartwell.
Not Ridgeview.
A small facility in Queens.
Sophia had hidden something close to Claire all along.
Inside the storage unit were boxes of documents, an old laptop, and a sealed envelope addressed to both sisters.
May you like
The envelope contained one line.
I hid the originals where Jonathan would look last: with the woman he convinced everyone was too unstable to keep records.
