Chapter 5 - THE PRETTY WATCH

Sophia Carter stood up from the floor, clutching Lily tightly against her hip. Her face was pale, her hands trembling as she adjusted her daughter's pale blue dress.

"Mr. Moretti... I am so sorry she caused such a scene in front of your guests," Sophia stammered nervously, bowing her head as she began backing toward the staff wing corridor. "I'll take her to our quarters immediately—"

Dominic raised his hand, stopping her in her tracks.

"Never apologize for that again, Sophia," Dominic commanded, his tone firm, warm, and absolute. "Your daughter is under my personal protection for the rest of her life. Anything she or you ever need in this house... you have it."

Sophia let out a quiet, gasping breath of relief, nodding deeply. "Thank you, Don Dominic. Thank you."

Sophia turned to carry Lily down the adjoining service hallway toward the staff quarters.

As she reached the mahogany doorway, little Lily leaned her head over her mother’s shoulder, her brown eyes locking onto Dominic, who was standing beside Ethan near the shattered cake.

"Mr. Dominic?" Lily called out in her sweet, high-pitched voice.

Dominic turned his head instantly. "Yes, Lily?"

Lily pointed her small, chubby index finger toward her own tiny wrist.

"The bad man had a pretty watch," Lily said casually, hugging her mother's neck.

Dominic’s posture locked into complete, rigid stillness. His eyes narrowed into two razor-sharp slits of dark liquid fire.

He stepped away from Ethan, taking three long, heavy strides across the marble floor toward the service doorway.

"What kind of watch, Lily?" Dominic asked softly, stopping two feet from the child.
