Chapter 10 - THE GUARDIAN'S VOW

An hour later, the grand estate had returned to a state of absolute, peaceful security. The perimeter gates were sealed, the remaining staff had returned to their duties, and the heavy blizzard outside Lake Michigan blew soft white snow against the tall arched windows.

In the small, cozy living room of the staff quarters wing, three-year-old Lily Carter sat on a plush sofa wrapped in a warm wool blanket, happily drinking a cup of warm chocolate with mini marshmallows. Beside her sat her mother, Sophia, her eyes red from crying, holding her daughter close against her shoulder.

A soft, polite knock sounded at the door.

Sophia stood up quickly, opening the heavy oak door.

Standing in the hallway was Dominic Moretti, accompanied by his seven-year-old son Ethan. Dominic had removed his suit jacket, wearing his black silk shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. Ethan carried a large, beautiful white-and-gold gift box tied with a satin blue ribbon.

"Don Dominic..." Sophia murmured, bowing her head respectfully.

"May we come in, Sophia?" Dominic asked softly.

"Of course, sir. Please," Sophia offered, stepping aside.

Ethan walked forward, carrying the heavy gift box over to three-year-old Lily. He set the box gently on the coffee table in front of her and untied the blue ribbon.

Inside the box sat a massive, custom-made replica of the birthday cake—a beautiful, five-inch mini cake made entirely of safe, allergen-free vanilla sponge, golden icing, and dark chocolate stars, made specially by the pastry team thirty minutes ago.

"This one is for you, Lily," Ethan smiled warmly, offering the tiny girl a small silver fork. "Because you saved my life."

Lily’s wide brown eyes lit up with pure, radiant joy. She looked up at her mother, then looked at Ethan, taking the silver fork into her small hand.

Dominic walked over to Sophia, pulling a thick, sealed leather folder from his inner pocket and placing it gently into her hands.

"What is this, Don Dominic?" Sophia asked, looking down at the heavy folder.

"The deed to a private, five-acre residential property in Oak Brook," Dominic explained smoothly, his baritone voice warm and sincere. "And a trust fund registered under Lily's name that guarantees her education through university. You no longer work as a housekeeper in this house, Sophia."

Sophia stared at the folder, tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude spilling over her lashes. "Don Dominic... I don't know what to say... this is too much—"

"It is nothing compared to what she gave me tonight," Dominic interrupted softly, looking down at three-year-old Lily, who was happily eating a piece of vanilla cake with Ethan sitting beside her.

Dominic knelt down beside the coffee table, resting his broad hand gently on Lily's head, brushing her light-brown hair.

"In this city, Lily," Dominic whispered softly into the little girl's ear, "you and your mother will never be afraid again. That is my vow to you."

Lily looked up at the feared crime boss of Chicago, offered him a sweet, frosting-smudged smile, and held out a small piece of cake on her fork toward him—a tiny gift of love that sealed a bond that no syndicate, no traitor, and no amount of money in the world could ever break.
