Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE IN THE VALLEY
Police reached Sarah’s home forty minutes after Nathan opened his door.
They found the back entrance open and blood on the kitchen floor.
Marcus was gone.
Sarah was alive.
She had crawled into the laundry room after Lily escaped and used a damaged smart speaker to trigger an emergency call. The storm delayed responders, but the signal provided an address before the system lost power.
She had suffered a serious head injury, a fractured wrist, and blood loss. She was transported to the same hospital as her children but remained unconscious for two days.
Marcus’s abandoned truck was found near a closed logging road. Inside were cash, forged identification, Sarah’s phone, and copies of trust documents bearing signatures she denied making.
He was located later at a motel east of the mountains after attempting to pay under another name.
There was no dramatic confrontation involving Nathan.
No billionaire surgeon kicking down a door.
Investigators followed records, roads, and the trail Marcus believed snow would hide.
The case expanded beyond the assault.
Financial investigators documented forged trust requests, identity theft, coercive control, and the transfer of Sarah’s inheritance into shell businesses. Police recovered unsent letters addressed to Nathan from a locked desk in Marcus’s home.
Some dated back six years.
Sarah had written after Lily was born.
After her first hospitalization.
After discovering she was pregnant with the twins.
Marcus kept every letter.
He had read Nathan’s name often enough to know exactly whom Lily would search for if Sarah ever taught her the way out.
That was why he attacked Sarah the night she prepared to leave.
He had found the guardianship papers.
