Chapter 4 - THE PAPER INSIDE THE COAT

Paramedics arrived through the storm and transferred the children to the nearest regional hospital.
Lily had severe hypothermia and frost injuries to both feet, but she had reached shelter before the cold became irreversible. Owen and Ethan were treated for exposure and dehydration. Their condition remained critical through the first night.
Nathan rode with Lily.
She woke briefly in the emergency department and searched the room.
“My brothers?”
“They’re here.”
“Mommy?”
“We’re finding her.”
Lily’s fingers moved weakly over her coat.
“The paper.”
Rosa had brought the soaked clothing in a plastic hospital bag. Inside the coat lining, nurses found a folded envelope sealed beneath strips of clear household tape.
The pages were wet at the edges but readable.
The first was a handwritten letter from Sarah.
Nathan recognized her handwriting immediately.
She apologized for waiting so long. She said Marcus monitored every phone, email account, bank statement, and doctor’s appointment. Whenever she tried to contact Nathan, Marcus threatened to take Lily and report Sarah as mentally unstable.
The letter continued:
You probably believe I chose this life. I need you to know I have been trying to leave it.
The second page listed dates.
Hospital visits.
Broken bones described as falls.
Returned letters.
Withdrawals from Sarah’s inheritance account that she never authorized.
The third page was an emergency guardianship declaration naming Nathan as the person Sarah wanted to care for Lily, Owen, and Ethan if she became unable to protect them.
It had been signed in front of a domestic-violence advocate three days earlier.
At the bottom, Sarah had written:
The bracelet is the original. Marcus made a copy for the pawn-shop photograph. Please believe Lily even if I cannot explain the rest myself.
Nathan lowered the page.
For seven years, he had believed his sister sold their mother’s bracelet, rejected him, wasted her inheritance, and wanted him erased from her children’s lives.

Sarah had not erased him.
Marcus had placed himself between every attempt she made to return.
