Chapter 6 - The Silhouette in the Hallway

Lily slowly reached forward and placed the dark object onto the glass blotter of Vincent’s desk, directly beneath the warm glow of the brass desk lamp.

Vincent leaned forward, his hazel eyes locking onto the object. Under the concentrated beam of light, a microscopic detail on its dark, synthetic surface became visible—a tiny, metallic contact grid and a hairline seam, completely invisible to the naked eye unless examined under direct illumination.

Vincent froze.

The last trace of his emotional smile vanished, replaced by an icy, lethal stillness. He picked up the object between his thumb and forefinger, turning it slowly under the light.

It was not a physical deformity. It was a sophisticated, custom-designed acoustic dampening device—a high-tech medical blocker implanted deep within his ear canal, designed to neutralize the auditory nerve while mimicking organic tissue.

He had not been born deaf. He had been kept deaf.

CLACK.

Suddenly, from the far end of the marble hallway outside the study, the sharp sound of a heavy brass object dropping onto the floor echoed clearly into the room.

Vincent snapped his head toward the open doorway.

Framed against the bright sunlight of the far corridor windows, the distinct, tall silhouette of a person stepped rapidly backward out of view, their footsteps hurrying away down the private wing of the mansion.

Vincent stared at the empty doorway, then down at the microscopic mechanical blocker held tightly between his fingers.

The realization hit him like a physical blow: someone inside his inner circle, someone with access to his medical care since childhood, had intentionally silenced him for thirty-seven years to control his empire.

Vincent whispered, his new voice trembling with disbelief and dangerous fury:

May you like

"What...?"

CUT.
