Chapter 10 - The Sovereign of Sound

By nightfall, New York Harbor was blanketed in a heavy, rolling fog. The lights of the Manhattan skyline flickered through the mist like distant stars, casting a blue, ethereal glow through the tall study windows.

The study had been emptied of lieutenants. Only Emily and Lily remained, sitting comfortably on the plush velvet sofa in the corner of the room. Lily was drinking warm milk from a glass, her princess dress rumpled, while Emily watched Vincent with a mixture of profound reverence and lingering caution.

Vincent stood by the window, looking out at the foggy expanse. He was wearing a fresh white shirt, his neck tattoo stark against his pale skin, his hands folded behind his back.

He listened.

He listened to the rhythmic chink of Lily’s glass hitting the saucer. He listened to the distant hum of police sirens echoing across the water. He listened to the wind howling softly against the glass. The world was no longer a flat, two-dimensional movie playing in silence before his eyes; it was a vast, deep, resonant symphony—and he was finally its master.

The double doors of the study opened quietly. Leo stepped into the room, holding a encrypted satellite phone in his gloved hand.

"We tracked Marcus’s vehicle to a private airfield in Teterboro," Leo reported quietly, his tone now deeply respectful, tempered by the terrifying awe of his leader's transformation. "He has a charter flight scheduled for Geneva in forty minutes. Should I order the strike team to take him down on the tarmac?"

Vincent turned around slowly. His hazel eyes were devoid of anger, replaced by a cold, absolute clarity that chilled Leo to the bone.

"No," Vincent spoke, his voice smooth and controlled now, the rough edges of thirty-seven years of silence rapidly disappearing under his formidable willpower. "Let him fly."

Leo blinked, confused. "Let him fly, sir? He lied to you your entire life. He stole your father's throne while keeping you locked in the dark."

Vincent walked over to his desk, picking up the tiny velvet box containing the blocker. He held it up to the warm light of the desk lamp, watching the intricate micro-circuits glint in the dark.

"He thinks... I am still in the dark," Vincent said softly, a dark, lethal smile spreading across his sharp jawline. "He thinks... I cannot hear the storm coming."

Vincent looked over at Lily, who offered him a small, cheerful wave from the sofa. Vincent nodded back to her, a rare moment of genuine warmth passing between the crime boss and the little girl who had shattered his cage.

Then he turned back to Leo, his voice dropping into a register of absolute command:

"Freeze all Geneva accounts. Seize the shipping manifests. When his plane lands... he will find that his world... has gone silent."
