Chapter 7 - THE CRACK IN THE IMPERVIOUS

Moretti’s head snapped toward the doorway like a sprung trap.

His dark eyes widened, piercing the black void of the hallway threshold with lethal intensity. His right arm moved with blinding speed, reaching down to the concealed drawer beneath the dark marble nightstand. With a smooth, practiced motion, his hand wrapped around the textured grip of his heavy, custom sidearm. He drew it quietly, resting the barrel against the edge of the mattress, covered by the fold of the silk duvet.

"Stay down," Moretti commanded in a voice so low it was almost a sub-audible vibration, his eyes never leaving the dark doorway.

Beside him, Lily did not scream or panic. She pulled her knees up to her chest, burying her face into the frayed fur of her gray stuffed rabbit, hugging it with all her strength.

Silence reclaimed the penthouse suite.

Moretti sat frozen, every nerve ending in his body fired with electrical tension. The ambient amber lighting of the baseboards cast long, sharp shadows across the leather headboard. The distant lights of Manhattan sparkled beyond the panoramic glass, indifferent to the life-and-death game unfolding in the sky.

He listened with absolute concentration. He filtered out the faint hum of the air filtration system, the distant rumble of the city, and the rapid pulse of his own blood in his ears.

There was no second footstep. No shadow moved across the threshold. No figure stepped into the soft amber light of the master bedroom.

The dark hallway remained completely, terrifyingly empty.

Yet the silence now felt entirely different. It was no longer the empty quiet of a secure luxury penthouse; it was the heavy, suspended silence of a predator holding its breath just beyond the edge of vision.

Moretti slowly slid his legs out from under the duvet, his dark trousers shifting against the sheets. His bare feet touched the cool, polished oak floor. He stood up to his full height—a tall, menacing figure holding a weapon in the quiet room—his black shirt open at the collar, his eyes locked on the dark void outside his door.
