Chapter 6 - THE SECRET IN THE SHADOWS

Moretti shifted his weight on the high mattress, turning his entire body toward Lily. He leaned down, bringing his formidable face closer to hers, his dark eyes searching every inch of her innocent expression.
"What person, Lily?" Moretti asked, his voice dropping into a tense, dangerous whisper. "Tell me."
Lily looked back toward the dark hallway threshold one more time. The void outside the room remained silent, black, and motionless.
She turned back to Moretti. She reached out with her small hand, touching the crisp cotton of his dark black shirt, and leaned her head close to his ear.
Moretti bent his head down, pressing his ear inches from her small lips.
Lily began to whisper.
What she said—the specific, terrifying details of a shadow, a figure, a walk, or a distinct physical feature—was whispered so low, so intimately, that the sound did not carry beyond the space between them. It was a description meant for him alone—a horrifying truth delivered in the quiet voice of a child.
As the whisper reached his ear, Moretti’s hand, resting flat against the open pages of the colorful storybook, froze solid.
His knuckles locked. His chest stopped moving entirely.
The confusion and suspicion that had dominated his mind instantly shattered, replaced by a wave of violent, icy realization. The description was too precise, too specific, too terrifyingly accurate to be the product of a child's imagination. It pointed to something—or someone—who possessed access to his master keycards, his private elevator bypasses, and the internal architecture of his life.
Someone who waited for the precise moment his heavy eyelids finally closed.

At that exact, suspended fraction of a second, a soft, distinct sound echoed from the dark hallway outside the bedroom door.
It was the microscopic, unmistakable creak of a polished leather shoe pressing against the edge of an uncarpeted oak floorboard.
