Chapter 5 - THE CONTENTS OF THE REPORT

The document was an official, confidential laboratory tox-analysis report bearing the private seal of a specialized toxicology research facility in Zurich, Switzerland, dated twenty months prior—two months before Genevieve’s death.
Lawson’s eyes scanned the fine print across the top page.
As his eyes moved down the technical medical data, his expression altered rapidly. The confusion and grief on his face vanished, replaced by an acute, terrifying alarm. The muscles in his throat tightened; his breathing became shallow and fast.
The report did not detail an autoimmune disease. It detailed the precise chemical breakdown of a synthetic, heavy-metal immunosuppressive compound—a rare, odorless toxin designed to slowly destroy human bone marrow over time, mimicking the exact symptoms of aggressive, treatment-resistant acute leukemia.
At the very bottom of the second page, listed under "Genetic Compatibility & Secondary Target Vectors," was a single handwritten note in Genevieve’s delicate, precise handwriting:
“It is in the bloodline protocols. If they cannot control Lawson, they will use the children’s marrow to force his surrender. Save Jonah. Save Blythe.”
Lawson raised his head slowly. His dark eyes were no longer those of a grieving father; they were the eyes of a lethal predator who had just realized he had been fighting the wrong war for two straight years.
He turned his body toward the guarded hallway that led deeper into the estate—toward the private medical suite where his security detail guarded his dying children day and night.
"What is this?" Lawson demanded, his voice a low, terrifying growl that made the armed guards near the door shift uncomfortably. "What am I looking at, Elena?"
Elena glanced nervously past his shoulder toward Prescott Hale and the two security men standing near the threshold.

"The reason their treatment isn't working," Elena whispered softly. "They aren't dying of leukemia, Lawson. Someone inside your inner circle is continuing what they started with Genevieve. They are administering the same compound into their daily IV saline bags."
Lawson slowly turned his head back to look at her, the entire universe narrowing down to the space between them.
