Chapter 26 - FIRE IN THE STRAIT

The bridge went deathly quiet. A hypersonic glide vehicle traveling at Mach six left no margin for human reaction. At that speed, one hundred and fifty miles was a matter of two minutes.
No naval vessel had ever successfully intercepted an operational hypersonic weapon under combat conditions.
"Is Link 16 still down?" Avery demanded, stepping directly into the center of the tactical plot.
"Still down, Captain!" the radar officer shouted, his voice cracking. "The cruisers can't see the tracks! Their local radar elevation is capped at sixty degrees! The glide vehicles are coming in from eighty-five degrees—almost pure vertical!"
"Master Chief!" Avery turned to Cross. "Get the prisoner down to the brig. Vance, give me your emergency flag-officer authorization key."
The Admiral pulled a heavy titanium key from around his neck and slapped it into Avery's hand without a word. "What are you doing, Avery?"
"The *Lincoln* has a defensive system that isn't listed on any public naval register," Avery said, her hands moving across the bridge’s auxiliary weapons console with blistering speed. "It was installed three months ago under Operation Obsidian Shield. An experimental railgun battery and high-energy chemical laser mounted inside the forward weapons sponson."
"Obsidian Shield was never certified for fleet use!" Vance protested. "The power draw will burn out the ship’s secondary reactor coolant loops!"
"It’s either burn the coolant loops or burn the whole ship, Admiral," Avery said, turning the titanium key into the red slot marked *SPECIAL PROJECTS OVERRIDE.*
The console illuminated with a brilliant, blinding amber light.
*PROJECT OBSIDIAN SHIELD: ONLINE.*
*TARGETING PROTOCOL: DEEP SPEAR AUTONOMOUS INTERCEPT.*
*CAPACITOR BANKS: CHARGING — 82%... 91%... 100%.*
"Commander Miller, CDC!" Avery spoke into the tactical headset. "Slaved targeting from bridge station alpha. Lock onto tracks Alpha-One through Alpha-Four. Do not use fire-control radar. Slave the laser optics to the infrared plume of the booster rockets!"
*"Target locked via infrared!"* Miller reported from below decks. *"Capacitor banks ready. But Captain, the heat dissipation—"*
"Discharge battery one!" Avery commanded.
Outside the bridge windows, the night sky was torn apart by an unnatural, violet-colored flash. A beam of focused coherent energy, thick as a tree trunk, reached into the storm clouds, illuminating the rain with an eerie, radioactive glow.
Forty miles above the ocean, the first incoming hypersonic warhead struck the focused thermal beam. The friction and intense energy shattered its ceramic heat shield; the glide vehicle disintegrated instantly under atmospheric drag, blooming into a momentary streak of golden fire across the stratosphere.
"Hit! Target one destroyed!" the bridge radar operator screamed in triumph. "Target two entering terminal dive! Range forty miles!"
"Discharge railgun array!" Avery ordered without a second's pause.
The entire carrier groaned as a massive electromagnetic pulse discharged from the forward hull. The sound was like a thunderclap that originated from within the steel itself. A ten-kilogram tungsten-alloy penetrator launched at Mach seven, racing upward into the cloud layer.
Two seconds later, a secondary explosion rattled the bridge windows. The shockwave blew the rain sideways against the reinforced glass.
"Target two destroyed!"
"Tracks three and four?" Vance shouted, gripping Avery’s shoulder.
The radar operator stared at his screen, his jaw dropping. "Tracks three and four... they’re veering off! They were programmed to self-destruct if the lead vehicles failed to clear the path!"
The sky over the Philippine Sea went dark once more. The rain returned to its steady, mournful rhythm against the flight deck.
On the console, the warning lights for the secondary reactor flashed amber, then stabilized as the automated cooling pumps fought back the thermal surge.
Avery released the weapons key and turned to Vance. Her uniform was soaked with water and sweat, her face pale under the fluorescent glare, but her eyes were burnished like tempered steel.

"They used their best weapon, Admiral," she said quietly. "Now it’s our turn to strike back."
