Chapter 21 - THE SHADOW OVER THE PACIFIC

The salt spray hit Avery Hayes’s face like crushed glass as the wind roared across the carrier's four-and-a-half-acre flight deck. Beneath her combat boots, the hundred-thousand-ton hull of the USS *Abraham Lincoln* surged through the swells of the Philippine Sea, its nuclear reactors humming at full flank speed. Around her, deck crews in color-coded jerseys scrambled toward tied-down F/A-18 Super Hornets, chaining down munitions and securing fueling lines as the general quarters alarm continued its unrelenting cadence.

"Captain Hayes! With me!" Admiral Vance shouted over the whistling turbines. His gray hair was plastered to his forehead by the driving rain, but his weathered features were locked in a rigid mask of command.

Avery didn’t hesitate. She matched his long strides across the non-skid surface, heading straight for the island superstructure. Behind them, the young communications lieutenant clutched the yellow teletype paper against his chest as if shielding it from enemy fire.

They ducked through the heavy steel hatchway, the pneumatic seal hissing shut behind them, cutting off the deafening howl of the jet engines and the ocean. Inside the fluorescent-lit companionways, the ship was alive with the disciplined frenzy of two thousand sailors moving to their assigned stations. Watertight doors were dogging down in rapid, synchronized thuds.

"Explain the spoofing, Lieutenant," Avery commanded before they even reached the Combat Direction Center ladder. Her voice was steady, dropping an octave into the precise, arctic timbre that had once terrified foreign intelligence operatives across three continents. "What frequencies are down?"

The lieutenant swallowed hard, blinking at the black tactical insignia pinned to Avery’s uniform—insignia that bore no standard naval designation, only the embossed silver trident crossed with an unmarked broadsword. "Ma'am, it's not just Yokosuka. We lost Link 16 datalinks across the entire carrier strike group. The guided-missile cruisers *Antietam* and *Chancellorsville* are operating entirely on local radar. Every high-frequency, ultra-high-frequency, and satellite relay back to INDOPACOM in Hawaii has been overridden by an administrative kill-switch."

"An administrative kill-switch doesn't happen by accident," Vance growled as he pushed through the double doors into the Combat Direction Center. "That requires Top Secret SIOP authorization. That requires a three-star signature from the Joint Staff."

"Or someone who stole the keycards before walking out of the Pentagon," Avery murmured, her mind already calculating the variables.

The CDC was bathed in low red battle lighting. Dozens of enlisted tactical specialists sat behind glowing circular consoles, the blue-green phosphor painting their focused faces. Huge wall-mounted display monitors showed the carrier strike group surrounded by a vast expanse of dark blue water—and encroaching from the north-northwest were six glowing red diamonds, moving with terrifying velocity.

The tactical action officer, Commander Miller, jumped up from his elevated chair in the center of the pit. "Admiral on deck! Captain, thank God you’re here."

"Skip the courtesies, Miller," Vance barked, stepping up to the master tactical plot. "What are those surface contacts?"

"Unidentified fast-attack hydrofoils, sir. Speed forty-two knots and climbing. They breached our outer perimeter through a blind spot created when the *Chancellorsville*’s primary phased-array radar rebooted following the comms blackout. They’re running without transponders, emissions control strict alpha. No civilian traffic moves like that in this sea state."

Avery leaned over the central glass table, her gloved fingers tracing the predicted intercept vectors. Her tactical intuition, honed in the blackest corridors of covert reconnaissance, saw what the fleet officers hadn't yet pieced together.

"They aren't trying to engage the carrier," Avery said softly.

Miller frowned. "Captain? They’re on an intercept course that puts them inside our Phalanx CIWS envelope within eight minutes."

"Look at their spacing," Avery pointed out, her fingertip tapping the glowing screen. "They aren’t in an attack wedge or an echelon formation. They’re driving a wedge between the *Lincoln* and our two destroyer escorts. They want to isolate us in this squall line. And look at their signature—the water displacement is too light for anti-ship missile boats."

Vance narrowed his eyes, catching her drift. "Boarding craft."

"High-speed tactical interdiction craft," Avery confirmed. "Crewed by forty to fifty men each. They aren't here to sink this ship, Admiral. Sinking a nuclear carrier starts World War Three with a hundred congressional inquiries. They’re here for an extraction or an execution."

Vance’s hand dropped toward his side arm. "Who sent them, Avery? Who in Washington has the power to silence Yokosuka and deploy black-budget assets right on top of my carrier?"

Avery pulled her satellite unit from her pocket, plugging the encrypted datapad into Miller’s primary diagnostic console. "The man who signed the order to demote me to an unassigned staff officer in Coronado. The man who tried to bury the Deep Spear files thirty years ago."

The main monitor flickered as Avery’s override took hold. The scrambled data resolved into a classified personnel folder stamped with the seal of the National Security Council.

On the screen was the face of a four-star admiral—Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Arthur Sterling.

"Sterling," Vance whispered, the color draining from his face. "He was my classmate at Annapolis."

"He was also the architect of Operation Deep Spear," Avery said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "And right now, he knows that the ledger we recovered in Singapore contains the bank accounts that bought his fourth star. He’s cutting the line."

Before Vance could respond, the deck beneath them shuddered violently. An alarm high above the ceiling began to scream in a sharp, stuttering pulse.

"Incoming! Surface-to-surface telemetry lock!" Miller yelled. "Contact One has activated target acquisition radar! We have a vampire inbound!"
