Chapter 22 - A Melodic Afternoon

By midday, the winter sun broke through the coastal clouds, flooding the estate's Victorian glass conservatory with brilliant, pale-gold warmth. The conservatory was a sprawling glass pavilion built by Julian’s grandfather, filled with towering subtropical palms, blooming white camellias, and a restored Steinway baby grand piano that had remained untouched beneath a canvas shroud since the death of Julian’s late wife, Elena.
Today, however, the shroud lay folded on a nearby wicker settee.
Clara sat at the piano bench, her fingers hovering tentatively over the ivory keys. In her old life, before her father’s medical debts devoured their modest savings and forced her into twelve-hour shifts at Grand Aurelia Diner, Clara had taken classical piano lessons at a community center. Her technique was unpolished, but her touch possessed a rare, instinctive warmth.
Around the piano, the three children stood in rapt attention. Maeve rested her chin against the polished mahogany rim, Alexander stood on his tiptoes to watch Clara’s hands, and Oliver held a small silver rattle he had found in the toy chest.
"Do you know this one?" Clara asked softly, playing a slow, gentle progression of major chords—a simple lullaby from her own childhood.
She began to hum, a sweet, unadorned melody that drifted through the rows of camellias and echoed against the vaulted glass ceiling.
To her astonishment, Maeve joined in.
It wasn't just a hum. The little girl opened her mouth, her voice sweet and crystalline, mimicking the melody with uncanny pitch. A second later, Oliver began tapping his rattle in perfect synchronization with the rhythm, while Alexander added a low, rhythmic chant: "La... la... la..."
Standing in the arched doorway of the conservatory, concealed partially by the broad fronds of a date palm, Julian watched in complete silence. Beside him stood Graves, his chief of personal security—a towering veteran with a scar cutting diagonally across his shaven scalp. Graves was a man who had seen men burned alive without flinching, yet at this moment, the older enforcer was discreetly dabbing the corner of his eye with a handkerchief.
"Incredible, boss," Graves murmured under his breath. "The doctors said their vocal cords had atrophied. Said it was psychological mutism with irreversible neurological lock."
"The doctors were looking for damage," Julian said quietly, his gaze locked entirely onto Clara. "She looked for them."
At that moment, Clara shifted the tempo, turning the melancholic lullaby into an upbeat, bouncing waltz. The triplets erupted into high-pitched giggles. Alexander grabbed Maeve’s hands and spun her around in a clumsy circle on the terracotta tiles, their laughter ringing like tiny silver bells throughout the sunlit sanctuary.
"Papa! Look!" Maeve suddenly cried out, pointing toward the palm fronds.
Julian froze. He had not intended to interrupt them, but the sight of Maeve’s flushed, joyful face and her outstretched hand pulled him forward like an invisible iron chain. He stepped into the clearing, unbuttoning his waistcoat and setting aside the heavy briefcase he carried.
"I see you, Maeve," Julian said, his lips curving into a genuine smile—a rare, startling expression that transformed his harsh, angular features into something boyish and radiant.
Maeve ran straight toward him, wrapping her arms around his knees. Julian bent down instantly, scooping the little girl into his arms with an effortless motion and lifting her high into the air. Maeve squealed with delight, kicking her patent-leather shoes.
Clara’s hands paused on the piano keys. She looked at Julian, watching the terrifying crime lord hold his daughter against his chest with a tenderness that defied everything the newspapers whispered about him. When Julian lowered Maeve and looked back at Clara over the girl’s shoulder, the intensity of his stare sent a sudden, electric shiver through Clara’s veins.

"Play it again, Clara," Julian commanded softly, his voice devoid of menace, carrying an intimate, unspoken gratitude that left her breathless. "Show me how it ends."
