Chapter 17 - The First Laughter

Despite the dark revelations of the ledger, the following morning brought an unexpected grace to the cold stone corridors of the estate. A light snow had fallen overnight, dusting the manicured hedges and rolling hills of Greenwich in a blanket of pristine, untouched white.

For the first time in over two years, the nursery doors were thrown wide open. Evelyn bundled the three children into heavy wool coats, down mittens, and knitted pom-pom hats, leading them through the grand terrace doors out into the crisp, glittering snow.

At first, the triplets hesitated at the threshold of the stone patio. The wide-open space, the bright glare of the winter sun, and the memory of the Southampton attack two years ago kept their tiny boots rooted to the granite. Julian clutched Evelyn’s coat, his lower lip trembling slightly.

"It's okay," Evelyn said softly, kneeling down until her face was level with theirs. She scooped up a handful of clean snow, packing it into a loose, round ball. "Watch this."

She tossed the snowball lightly against the trunk of a grand oak tree twenty feet away. It burst into a powdery cloud of white flakes with a soft *thump*.

Lucas’s eyes went wide with wonder. He reached down with his mitten, clumsily gathering a handful of snow, and hurled it toward the same tree. It fell five feet short, landing with a soft puff.

Evelyn gasped dramatically. "Oh, almost! Try again, Lucas!"

Mia toddled forward, scooped up snow, and instead of throwing it at the tree, she turned and tossed it directly onto Evelyn’s boot. Then, looking up at Evelyn’s feigned shock, the little girl’s chest heaved, her mouth opened wide, and a sound erupted that stopped every armed guard within fifty yards dead in their tracks.

Mia laughed.

It was a bright, bubbling, melodic sound—pure, unvarnished joy that echoed across the frozen lawns and drifted up toward the high limestone balconies.

On the second-floor terrace, Adrien was standing alongside Greco, reviewing perimeter security feeds on an encrypted tablet. The moment the sound of Mia’s laughter reached the balcony, Adrien’s tablet slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the stone tiles.

The crime lord walked slowly to the edge of the carved balustrade. Down below, Evelyn was on her knees in the snow, tickling Julian as Lucas threw snowballs at her back, with Mia jumping up and down, her bell-like laughter ringing through the winter air like church chimes on Christmas morning.

Greco, who had seen wars and slaughter without ever blinking, slowly took off his leather gloves and wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.

"In twenty years of serving your father and you, Mr. Belandi," the security chief whispered, "I have never heard anything so sacred in this house."

Adrien gripped the cold stone railing, his knuckles whitening as he watched the woman who had arrived with empty pockets and a broken apron bring back the soul of his entire universe. "Double the guard, Greco. Triple the electronic surveillance. If so much as a stray crow flies within two miles of this perimeter, I want it brought down."
