Chapter 6 - THE WHISPER IN THE DARK

Before Emma could pour the water from the bedside carafe, the heavy oak bedroom door opened with an abrupt, uncharacteristic suddenness.
Standing in the doorway was Frankie.
The broad-shouldered security chief, usually impeccably composed and emotionless, stood framed against the dim light of the outer hallway. His dark jacket was unbuttoned, his tie loose, and his face was unusually pale—a stark, terrifying sight for a man who had taken bullet wounds without flinching.
Desmond’s instincts instantly flared to life. The physical exhaustion from the leg spasm vanished in an instant, replaced by the lethal sharpness of a predator scenting danger in the dark. He sat up against his pillows, his bare, tattooed torso tensing as he locked eyes with his lieutenant.
"Boss," Frankie said, his voice raspy, tight, and completely devoid of its usual calm authority.
"What?" Desmond demanded, his icy blue eyes narrowing into razor-sharp points. "What happened, Frankie?"
Frankie stepped into the bedroom, closing the door softly behind him, his boots heavy against the floorboards. He walked directly to the side of the bed, ignoring the medical equipment and Emma’s presence entirely.
"They found him," Frankie said, his chest rising and falling quickly. "They found the man who planted the bomb under the car six months ago."
Desmond’s face went completely still. Every muscle in his face locked into a mask of pure, absolute silence. The room seemed to drop ten degrees in temperature as the long-awaited moment of retribution finally arrived.
Emma slowly turned her head toward Frankie, her brow furrowing as she sensed the sudden, overwhelming dangerous shift in the atmosphere. She stayed quiet, recognizing that the boundaries of medicine had just intersected with the brutal reality of Desmond’s world.
"Who?" Desmond asked, his voice low, quiet, and deadlier than a loaded gun.
Frankie hesitated for a single second, looking down at his chief with an expression of profound, disturbing shock.
He leaned down, bowing his head close to Desmond’s ear, and whispered a single name directly into the darkness.
The words were completely silent to Emma and the outside world—a phantom name spoken in the dead of night.

Desmond’s icy blue eyes widened in genuine, utter shock. The color drained from his sharp features. His lips parted slightly as a wave of complete disbelief washed over his expression.
Slowly, deliberately, Desmond turned his head away from Frankie, his eyes searching the dark, empty doorway leading out into the hallway, staring into the shadows as if looking at a ghost—someone within his innermost circle, someone he had trusted with his life, someone he never, in his wildest dreams, expected to betray him.
